Not at his current salary. It's too much for backup.
But tbh, this guy was great for us. Come for free had regular salary, most of his contract played well, was a standard player at Scudetto season. I think it's time to say thank you and good luck.

3rd game in a row where Dumbfries is not an option.

The only good thing about him is that apparently he doesn't want to renew. Please, do not change your mind and leave.

Not difficult to see why Acerbi is ahead of him

And FIF blame Inzaghi for leaking too many goals :ROFLMAO:; like what can Inzaghi do, when De Virj just stopped and stood there like today.

Even with Skriniar leaving, we shouldn't extend him. He's been awful for years, and would still ask for a big salary. Not wanting to lost two "regulars" shouldn't be enough of a reason to resign him when he is this bad. No one wanted Acerbi, but I think everyone agrees that Acerbi is a class above him. Funnily enough De Vrij looks like the one who's 34 between the two players.

Only insane men want to extend De Vrij and unfortunately they are our management. Losing two main defenders is better than keeping a proven deadweight who drains our cash and rolls a red carpet to our goal for attackers.

He looks like a 38 years old ready to get retired after spending the last few years dealing with severe injuries. And we are thinking about keeping him!

Gds reporting the offer is less than 4M/year for his renewal... i assume thats net. If i had to guess it probably a 2 year deal.

But his salary was around 3.8 net if I'm not wrong. It's stupid to offer him so much.

We should be offering him something like 1.5, that's what his performances have been worth.

If you were to read this thread from pages 25-35 , the majority of the members here considered him to be one of the best CB acquisitions (free transfer) in recent memory and an all round solid defender.

These comments were written in year 2021. Within 1 year to 1.5 years, everyone’s mind has changed.

I understand the guys performances have not been up to standard but a solid defender doesn’t lose it in 1.5 seasons. Something else is going on.

He doesn't have the same protection from the team as he had with Conte. We played lower and more compact. He's not good in fast movements and I think we rarely allowed him to be in such positions to show his weaknesses when Conte was here. He was the perfect guy to "orchestrate" the defence line, lead it but he's never been an athletic beast.

One thing we gotta admit that it's getting harder and harder for him to battle in those long aerial balls. It's as if he doesn't react fast enough to those and the striker can then get to a much better position and he can't challenge that.

Under Spalletti he was a solid cb while not exactly a perfect fit for a back 4. Under Conte the guy was our best cb. Ever since 2021 summer he has declined so badly he's getting benched by 35-year old Acerbi now. Is it the contract extension than never materialized? Is it Inzaghi's high defensive line compared to the lower block of Spalletti and Conte? Whatever it is it looks like there's no turning back for the guy. The signs are there. We can't ignore them.

Yeah 2-year extension with the same salary is just a tad too much. I can get the logic of not blowing the whole defence as we're losing Skriniar and maybe D'Ambrosio leaves also. If we are bringing in 3 new CBs in one summer, it will have consequences.

But still, the salary is just too big, he can't act as the starting CB anymore so justifying that same salary is simply difficult.
