It's funny, but Miki scored the second goal for EL Final against Ajax in 2017. Davie Klassen was the captain, and the goalie was Onana. Schnejder played for Nice in 2017.

That’s too simplistic. All these goals came in the biggest moments. When pressure is high he’s the one that cracks.

- Turning point for losing league
- Knocked out Champions League
- Knocked out Euros

He is great 95% of the time and great as a back up but he’s really no different than Lukaku in big moments if we’re being honest.
Don't you think this is a bit simplistic?

Turning point for losing league? That match was in MD 24, played at early February. In hindsight it might have been the turning point but no way that is a deciding match at that point.

That Depay goal had all kinds of things happening there and I simply cannot blame only De Vrij for not reacting fast enough for that play by Depay. I would even the ones who cracked in that goal first were the ones who let that pass in totally without any interference (Calhanoglu and Mkhitaryan were closest ones).

As for the Watkins goal, yes he was a bit late closing down that shot but again, they managed to whole game without such plays, De Vrij was excellent thoughout the match nullifying Bellingham etc. That was perhaps the first play when England managed to play this kind of vertical pass behind the lines (because they had fast runner there instead of Kane). Issue was again they let the pass to happen in the first place.

De Vrij can be blamed, partly, but defending is lot more than looking the defender doing defending right before the goal happens and deciding, hah he should have done better there. Specially at this level it's so much about the team effort and De Vrij is not known for being fast thus the team defending is not built for cases that CBs close down attackers in these kind of plays with their quickness.

This might sound like excuses but I definitely want to defend De Vrij here as people come to blame him for something which definitely is not his fault alone.

De Vrij continues to be an excellent option for us, even as a starter because IMO Inter also do not base it's defending on the athleticism qualities of its CBs. Ugh, I have spoken. :D

No point in selling him if it’s a 15mil offer unless there’s another target in mind for the future and that money would help us close. De Vrij at his best was an excellent to world class center back before Giroud mentally raped him into the Stone Age…

It would be a risky strategy trying to replace De Vrij now, especially with Acerbi carrying an injury into the offseason and seemingly only on a downward trajectory from this point on. De Vrij is 32, which isn’t that old for a CB, and he’s carrying momentum from a great international tournament. Add in the fact he’s our longest serving 1st team member/ alongside Lautaro, and that he has a longstanding relationship with Inzaghi; it wouldn’t be easy to replace him.
Watkins says hello

The overreaction here is ridiculous. I saw so-called world class CBs made worse mistakes. They just lucky that they play in teams that have other world class talents to cover their asses.

Netherlands's MF was non-existent and that put huge pressure on the defenders. Under such pressure, most players tend to make mistake.

Giroud is gone, so we'll be fine with De Vrij next season.

I think it is a bit tragic for him, like how David Seaman once said after humiliated by Ronaldinho, something like this, "you can be good for 89 minutes as a gk, but one mistake, everyone is going to remember that."

My point is it is kinda ridiculous and unfair to judge a player with that one mistake instead of evaluating the whole game performance.
Like every defender can look bad, if you just watch the goals they conceded.

Despite I think people are overreacting and not judging right; I still think he had some responsibility for the goal, but you cannot just fault him, there are some brilliancy of Watkins, and the keeper should be able to keep it out in that tight angle, also you have to give credit to SDV he tracked Watkins well, and tight marked him when he received the ball:

the following is where he could have done differently, but no necessarily better, and it is a bit insane to demand this, cause it also depends on the teammates;
Either he keeps up the tight marking and don't allow him to turn at all (the shoot), but it is in the penalty box, and one mistake, he can dash off and be wide open with the ball (since you are so tight) or slip it to the space for another England player, or get a penalty; the teammates would need to help close down or take the space behind him and top of the box.

Or he can close the far-post and not dive for the shot, and leave the GK for the near post.

but given the GK position, I don't think that was the defensive game plan.

In short, I think the keeper is more responsible than he is, but I think it was mostly due to the fact that it was a nice shot from Watkins that went between his legs and landed on the bottom corner.

for sure the goalkeeper is more at fault than De Vrij

but the goalkeeper doesn't play for Inter, so he doesn't matter

The SDV thread is a perfect example of posts only happening when mistakes are made. Watkins just made a great play it’s that simple. I love you SDV pls stay

I don't understand why you think Watkins' goal was a mistake from de Vrij. You block as much space as possible, and that's it, the rest is just luck. There's simply not enough time to react to the shot.
It's mostly on the GK actually but still, just a great shot at a great time to hit it. Leaves little room for reaction.

People just want to paint everything simple and expect perfection all the time, yet they ignore the entire game and then shout about how perfect someone was when he scores or
..assists (ffs, it's football, stop counting these!) and call any defender crap when we concede or if someone gets past him.

Joins the ranks of a "thigh muscle problem" along with Arnautovic, Taremei, and Zielinski. Injury being evaluated in a day or two according to FCInterNews.

Yeah, it's not hard to see what's going on. All these guys are 30+ years old basically. All played a ton of minutes this summer.

Its fine. We are in no rush to sign anyone. All is good. What could go wrong with a grandpa defender that just got operated on and De Cline.

Am I the only one who thinks De Vrij had a really good game particularly in the first half? He's much better than Acerbi in terms of recycling possession. Almost felt like Brozovic is back for 50 mins.
