Its a measure of De Vrij's reliability, he always performs and meets our high expectations from him, that this thread hardly gets commented upon. De Vrij is our silent leader. He is a very private person, no drama no fuss, and that reflects on this thread. I don't think De Vrij would mind that his thread if quiet.

Possibly our best free signing of all time.

one of our best signings in recent years, too, however you cut it. Getting Skriniar in was an important upgrade for the team - swapping his partner from Miranda to De Vrij was nearly as important (not quite as much - Ranocchia vs Skriniar is a bigger difference than Miranda vs De Vrij)

And his agent is Raiola, whom I always imagined to be the guy they hire when they wanna move or if they want that option, just in case. De Vrij is keeping him quiet, which also says something.

The best is Eto'o.

We got him and Barca gave us money in addition.

In the Bosman era he's definitely top 3.
There's Cambiasso hands down the best one. Not just for Inter. Best of all time.

De Vrij is up there possibly #2 with Luis Figo being the other one. Incredible influence on and off the field. We had a "loser" tag on us until Figo joined us (nobody rated the Coppa Italia until the late 2000s).

Cannot think of anyone else that deserves a top 3 mention.

Yeah De Vrij was unbelievable signing, now looking afterwards. But he wasn't GREAT in four-man defence IMO. He really started to flourish, immediately, in the 3-man defence as the leader of the defence line.

It's interesting to see can we sign him to an extension. Raiola talked with the management already last winter / spring about the contract. Didn't mention much when he was asked about it, just said "ask them" (meaning Inter). He was probably referring to the ownership situation as we couldn't commit to any contracts at that point.

We gave Bastoni the extension right after financial situation was settled (for awhile). Then we have Lautaro and Brozovic in the pipeline. And then Barella, De Vrij and Skriniar. Barella deserves a raise for sure but his contract runs out only in 2024. Those two defenders have their contracts up in 2023. So basically we have hell of a lot renewals to be negotiated already during this season.

Rumor is he's not even asking for a big raise, they've talked about 4.5mā‚¬ annual salary which sounds fucking insane given we gave almost 5mā‚¬ to Hakan just like that. But whatever, if he signs anywhere close to that, means he hasn't told Raiola to get a good contract, he has told Raiola to keep him at Inter. And Inter have told Raiola we cannot pay much more.

Watching de Vrij at a 4 man defence was as laughable as watching Bonucci playing for Milan. But yeah, he suits the 3-man defence way better.

Maybe I haven't been paying close enough attention but does our defense play the offside trap? Would be useful in a high-line defensive set up.

ā€œWe are very disappointed about the result. I was near the incident, there didnā€™t seem to be much in it, then VAR called and he gave it. Obviously, we are very disappointed at the way the game ended,ā€ De Vrij told DAZN.

Inter have fumbled nine points from leading situations so far this season, second only to Hellas Verona with 10.

Other than these goals, there were relative few real scoring opportunities at either end in the Derby dā€™Italia and De Vrij explains that is because they have been actively focusing on defensive positions with coach Simone Inzaghi.

ā€œWe worked really hard during the week on preventative marking, because weā€™ve conceded too many counter-attacks lately, so we had to do better. It means when we do lose the ball, we are set out better and it worked tonight, as we allowed very little on the break.ā€
