INTER PRESIDENT ZHANG RISKS JAIL TIME IN HONG KONG CASE

Calcio e Finanza reports that Inter president Steven Zhang could face up to three months in prison as the cases between him and creditors in Hong Kong continue to rumble on.

The report details how the China Construction Bank (Asia) Corporation (CCBA) have accused the Nerazzurri president of failing to repay around €300m in debts, an issue that could have serious ramifications for the 31-year-old businessman.

Creditors have sued Zhang in the United States, in Milan and there are two cases in Hong Kong, a sign of the troubles on the horizon for the Inter president. In the first court filing in Hong Kong, the 31-year-old must appear before a judge on March 13 for the ‘debtor examination’.

According to documents filed by creditors in the United States, Zhang will asked whether he owes any debts, how much he owes and what means he has to satisfy the judgement. He’ll also have to produce any documents relating to his assets and liabilities.

The Inter president faces two serious risks; the first is that, according to precedents cited by the creditors, the 31-year-old could face up to three months behind bars, should the court ascertain that he concealed assets in order to avoid complying with the judgement.

The second risk stems from a lawsuit filed by creditors for contempt in connection with the accusation of perjury during the first trial. China Construction Bank Asia are looking to “hold Zhang in contempt of court in Hong Kong due to his false affidavits in proceedings leading up to the Hong Kong judgement.”

Inter President Steven Zhang has decided on the law firm that will be representing him as he prepares to face the €300 million lawsuit from Chinese bank China Construction Bank

This according to Italian football finance news outlet Calcio e Finanza, who report that the Nerazzurri President will be represented by US-based law firm Statham and Wakins, who have also been involved with the President’s running of the Nerazzurri on several occasions.

Zhang is the subject of a €300 million lawsuit by China Construction Bank, who allege that the Nerazzurri President has hidden assets as they look to collect on unpaid debts regarding his dealings in China.

The Nerazzurri President will be represented by Statham and Watkins, particularly lawyers Jason C. Hegt and Zachary L. Rowen, in the case.

The US-based firm had also been involved in the transfer of ownership from previous Nerazzurri President Erick Thohir to Zhang in 2016, as well as the deal with former shirt sponsors Socios.com, and the issuance of the club’s €415 million bond.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has commented on how Inter President Steven Zhang tends to look whilst he watches his team play at the stadium

Speaking to Italian news outlet Calcio e Finanza, the Partenopei President spoke about how his Inter opposite number, part of a broader point that he doesn’t feel that modern football owners have the right kind of connection to their clubs. De Laurentiis has rarely been shy about expressing his often outspoken opinions.

Speaking to Calcio e Finanza, the Napoli President argued that the presence of owners with a more financial motivation has not been a positive influence on Italian football.
“When the financial funds start taking over, I start to get perplexed, because these financial funds have been the death of football, because all they’re interested in is maximizing the return of investment for their shareholders over the next five years,” De Laurentiis was scathing.
“Football, on the other hand, is supposed to be an entertainment spectacle, like cinema.”

De Laurentiis spared few words as he gave his impression of Nerazzurri President Zhang in particular, who he considers an example of a new type of owner who have become more prominent in Italian football in recent years, which he doesn’t see as a positive thing.
“Every now and then, I see him look a bit interested in his team, even if when he shows up at the stadium they usually lose,” the Napoli President joked about Zhang.
“Then when he comes into frame, he always has this sad puppy dog expression on his face,” he added.

A Hong Kong court has scheduled two hearings in the €300 million lawsuit against Inter President Steven Zhang

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, who report that the two hearings are set to be held on April 24 and May 10.

Zhang is the subject of a €300 million lawsuit from Chinese bank Chinese Construction Bank, who are looking to collect on unpaid debts related to business dealings in China, and allege that the Nerazzurri President has hidden assets from their efforts to collect.

One hearing had been scheduled to be held in a Milan-based court earlier this month, but was bumped back to April.

According to La Repubblica, additional hearings are set to be held by a Hong Kong-based court over the next couple of months, in a suit which will also see hearings held in the US.
