I think there's an interesting topic to be had here, having two starting goalkeepers.

Never in the highest levels of professional football two starting goalkeepers was a good idea, nor has it worked.

I wanted to write in the Handa/Onana thread, but i think this "problem" is very general.

I don't know how the rotation will work, it clearly won't be one for the cup and the other for the league. It will be idiotic to rotate them randomly.

It's clearly a deeper convo to be had imo, so mods feel free to merge with one of our gks if you think it's unnecessary.

Well obviously we are bringing in Onana to be our starting GK, not a rotation option, so not really much of a deep convo there. The actual discussion should be what happens if Onana comes and is an actual turd and we have to rely on a very aged Handa on his last year here while (most definitely) not able to afford another starting GK next year.

I'm not so sure about that. Onana's last games with Ajax where bad, very bad.

It's also due circumstances, but it was strange to see. I really liked Onana before his suspension and thought he was one of the best goalies in the world. So i was really hyped to see, we got him on a free. But his games after the suspension, man, he didn't even look like the player he was before.

I hope the new environment will do wonders and he find the best of himself again. But i'm a bit sceptical after his last games.

Is that really the case? Honest question.

I find it really hard to believe that our captain will become our Cup games goalie.

I also find it hard to believe for a fair 50/50 split of the games. Zero momentum, very bad for confidence... Just too much confusion.

Also, did we get Onana just for the cup games? That's also a no.

So what do we do? Flipping coin before every game?

Things like this worry me. Imagine if he has a terrible game for us. Something that Handa did for at least 5 times last season. Do we bench him the next game? And then what? Wait till Handa brainfarts again and do the switch?

It's gonna be interesting. I don't think we got Onana and we guaranteed him a starting spot. Or maybe we did and i missed that.

Handa has a contract for another year and retains the captaincy, so he should be the presumed starter for the upcoming season. Onana is a gamble, due to "personal issues" so starting some cup matches and against lower tier Serie A squads seems appropriate unless Handa really drops in form. As for morale concerns, if "our captain" has issues with this scenario then Inter has real problems.

Handanovic wasn't good this past season. His form recovered a bit towards the end, but he was a problem in several matches. You have to give Onana a genuine shot at the starting spot and see if he can earn it.

Just watched a compilation of Maignan on youtube, my god, he's done some amazing saves this season, surely one of the main reasons in milan's scudetto.
I don't know if Onana can have this kind of impact, i'm not too optimistic about him.

Handanovic has declined a lot but if we play an important match next week i would pick Handanovic automatically.
At this moment I would say Onana is still somewhat unproven and inconsistent. He needs to earn his place by playing well in Cup matches, building up his confidence and waiting until Handanovic is injured or makes mistakes. That’s good for him and the team. It’d be a disaster for everyone if we trust Onana too early then he make big mistakes.

Plus Onana has been on vacation for over a year. I'm genuinely concerned whether he will be able to return to top level.

I'm honestly not convinced that Onana was brought in to start for us and tbh, I saw his most recent "great" game for Cameroon and he wasn't that good.

Handanovic was awful last year and I like to say that we won a Scudetto despite him and not because he was good.

It was the best choice of free goalies, I'm sure if we had the money we wouldn't have chosen Onanа.

I don’t think we should expect him to be at that level. Nor does he necessarily need to be for us to still be successful. Handa this year was below average except for a few big moments. Our defense being solid made things manageable but how many saves did he make this year that he wasn’t expected to make? Not many.

My biggest concern for Onana is just getting the basics right. He doesnt even need to be spectacular. If he can be solid fundamentally and rely on his superior athleticism as needed he will still be a upgrade on what we had last year. He will not be Handa in his prime but thats also not what he’s replacing. That type of keeper costs a lot of money and to be honest isn’t even on the market this summer.

I liked Emiliano Martinez very much, but he will probably be demanding a starter role, rightfully so. His aerial command is something else

I like my keepers cocky. So Emiliano would be great but I have to think he's going to be chased by some big clubs here shortly. Bayern, Chelsea, United all rumored.
