The importance of writing style

Is it just me, or is there anyone else here who pays a great deal to writing style at a forum?

For example. If a person can´t use paragraphs and write everything together, I simply won´t read the post.
If a person write with just slang and shorten every word, I won´t take him seriously.

Also when people write like this:

"Inter is a very good team
and I find them to be the best team
in the world. I´m hoping that
Davids will become a successfull
player for us."

I never read such posts. Where they over-do the Enter button.

CapsLock is another thing I think we can all say we despise. No one read posts that are written with CapsLock. But I also get annoyed to read posts that don´t have players' names with capital letters and etc.

At a forum, I look at the writing style first and then decide whether I want to read the post or not. Could be the most knowledgable Inter fan ever, but if he can´t write properly, then I won´t ever know if he is knowledgable.

I use a lot of "gonna", "wanna". Is that equally as annoying?

I do agree with these points of yours :

(1) If a person writes like this :

"Inter is a very good team
and I find them to be the best team
in the world. I´m hoping that
Davids will become a successfull
player for us."

(2) Too much slang is also not liked by Pravesh. :D

(3) Paragraphing also is good to have. Even if we paste rumours, we can just use our brain and change it into paragraph format. ;)

(3) And yeah, all the sentences, paragraphs with CapsLock is also really irritating. BUT :D , I don't mind that much if the names don't have capital letters, but it's actually good to have those capital letters.

## But even I used to have (and still have some) these kinda problems. We should really improve on this, so that it would feel good to read the posts. Please don't take it in other ways, Jimmy is actually telling the right thing.

:) ;)

And I thought I'm the only one. :D I totally agree with you. I think these are the things that IMO should be done:
  • 1) Proper capital letters. Capital letters are used on players'/clubs' name, beginning of a sentence and the 'I' that is referring to ourselves. :)

    2) Not simply cutting and pasting articles. I believe it's good if: 1) The headline of the rumour is included and bolded, 2) The date is played somewhere near the headline and is left normal or italic-ed, 3) Make sure that there is one line space between each paragraph.

    3) Proper paragraphing. Use paragraph when: 1) You are gonna talk about a different point & 2) You have writted very long in the previous paragraph. A paragraph should consist of 2-5 lines IMO. In the 'Post a reply' box, it is approximately 7-10 lines.

    4) Don't put a space before punctuations but do so after it. Just one space!!!

    5) Don't abuse the 'Enter' button. You should only press it to make a new paragraph. And, make sure you leave a line between each paragraph.

    6) Don't abuse the Caps Lock. :D Well, I can't remember the last time I saw such post. Perhaps, ZZANG's posts. :D

    7) This is personal opinion but if you use '?' or '!', make sure you use it 1-3 per use only. Well, I use 3 normally. :D (Meaning, I use '???' or '!!!') But I'm trying to change it to just one. :)

    8) This is again, straightly personal opinion. But I think it's best if smilies are: 1) Put compactly together (No spacing) when you are using multiple smilies & 2) Should have ONE spacing between texts (Brackets exempted. Example, I wouldn't rate this smilie annoying ---> :)).

    9) And this one is just a pure selfish personal opinion. No red colours please. :D Not only that I hate red (Milan...Merda...Milan), I don't think it matches well with the blue background. But, please, this is purely a biased personal opinion. :D
OK, that's just my opinions. :D Some of them are informal, honestly. :)

About the slangs of 'wanna' or 'gonna', I personally don't mind them. In fact, I prefer them compared to 'want to' or 'got to'. :D

IMO, posting style is very very important. I will have this perception if a new member has a good posting style even though I haven't known him yet. Vice versa. IMO; posters who have good posting style in the forum are Tim (Mikitty), Jimmy, Tommi and Jake. Sorry if I miss out anyone. :)

Oh, and you'll look like a forum expert if you can utilize the functions such as 'Code', 'Img', 'List' and others. :)

Actually I have had this same topic on my mind for some time. It is MUCH enjoyable to read posts when they are written correctly which I mean those things Jimmy and Handoyo point out. In fact Handoyo's first six "cases" are excactly what I had wanted to say to all here who can't write (no offense :) ).

Jimmy, a very good topic you created!

edit. Han, sorry man. :)

Nice topic, something i've always wondered how my fellow posters feel about. I don't bother reading any "ugly" writing, it has to be in decent shape. One has to use paragraphs to make it easy to read and using capital letters when adressing teams and players is the most important thing for me. Abusing the "enter" button is a huge no.

Eh, i'd like to know how you guys think of my writing style. Is it good enough? ;)

Well, everyone here has some good points. ;) I don´t mind if people write "gonna" instead of "going to" or "wanna" instead of "want to". Sometimes I even like the slang as long as it is understandable. And IMO it really does have a dominant impact on the eyes if it is a chaotic post or an orderly post.

But I have one question: Why is there a bigger space between line 2 and 3 than the rest of the lines? :)

Actually, i do my best to read posts that are of topics that i am interested about. However, posts that are not written properly (and there are a myriad of reasons) will lose my attention fast. Ultimately, writers will have to understand that in order to get their point across, and to do so in a more mature and sensible way, proper writing has to be one of the top orders of the day. Of course, the essence of the post has to be there as well, in order to make it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Also, i hope nobody tries to defend their style of writing with a lack of understanding of the English language. It isn't just about writing in English - in every language in this world, there should be a sensible way of writing, and i do believe that no one language prides itself on writing in shortforms, or slang, and all the reasons that some of you have so well pointed out.

I don't want to sound elitist, but Forza Inter forums has a reputation of being one of the best Inter boards around, and i believe we pride ourselves on delivering proper news, great articles, and now, an attempt at presenting ourselves in a more presentable manner.

Ciao,
Tim

Well, I personally don't mind the use of slang. :) Hey, this is not an English forum! :p I mean, we shouldn't be constrained to talk/type as if we're doing an exam. :) If you make an analogy of the forum's writing style to dress code, the forum's dress code is smart casual. :):D

I have an idea, why don't we use this thread if we ever have any doubt about the English language? Those smarta$$es like Tim or Jimmy can teach us a thing or two. :D We can also point out each other's mistake and help them to improve. ;) Let me start.

'I' should be in capital letter. I think you know this and you were just lazy. :finger::p

1) Thankyou should be separated to thank you.
2) If you use a coma, leave a space after that and use a small letter for the next letter unless you're typing someone's name.
3) Proberly is spelled wrongly. It should be properly.
4) Attemp is spelled wrongly. It should be attempt.
5) Use capital letter for 'I'.

I hate people who use too many smilies in one post.

I hate people who quote a very long post just to add a few lines of their own comments to it. And then some idiot comes and quotes the whole thing again and adds a smilies to it or something. It looks horrible.

Most of my points are already listed above in this thread so I`ll shut up for now.

PS. If I sometimes miss a capital letter somewhere it`s because my shift hasn`t been working that well since I spilled yoghurt on my keyboard a couple of days ago. :p

How can I forget that! Yeah, I agree. We shouldn't just press the 'Quote' button and then post our opinion. We need to erase the unnecessary part of the quote and then add our comment.

Another thing, if we are gonna use multiple quotes in a post, I think we should leave a line before the next quote. That means:

*quoting someone*
Your opinion
---> One line spacing
*next quote*
your next opinion

And so on. :) Well, just my opinion. :D
