Kondogbia left because we signed Vecino. Only then he expressed the desire to leave. Sure Spalletti wanted to keep him but only for squad depth. Inter had just signed two of his requests in midfield (Valero and Vecino) and with Gagliardini coming from a great season, it was clear to everyone, including Kondogbia, the Frenchman would start the season as an option from the bench. Kondogbia wasn't willing to fight for his place so he decided to force a move to a club where he would be a guaranteed starter.

I remember I was upset when he left, his adventure in Italy wasn't best, but I liked him. Absolutely. Spalletti would have done wonders with KDog, although I wonder if we'd have seen Brozovic flourish like we have if Kondogbia had stayed.

He was a victim of our incompetence as a club. I don’t think he can really play in our current system though. Flat 2 in midfield suits him perfectly.
