The away goal rule was stupid but that rule worked in our favour as well sometimes. We beat Valencia in the quarters 1-0 home and lost 2-1 away that season in CL and we progressed they got eliminated.I didn't dislike the away goal rule, but that game should be the best example why it was bullshit in some conditions. Both teams literally played in the same city, same stadium, both games ending in draw, and they qualified for the final out of nowhere. They should have added some regulations or something for these kind of games, but the decision they removed it completely was not a bad idea imo.
The only disadvantage is that if both legs end in a tie, then the away team in second leg have to play an extra 30 minutes in the away field without having any advantage, it's something that happened in RM Chelsea game last season. Maybe they should also remove the 30 extra minutes and go to the penalty kick directly?
About that CL SF vs Milan, it's also worth sighing that Vieri missed both legs. But the problem with final qualification was that we never know what would happen
against Juve. If we would lose, it'd be something that their fans talked for ages. The same happened in the reverse. Milan Juve rivalry is never same with the Inter Juve one. I actually remember an Italian Juve fan in a football documentary saying "Losing the CL final to Milan was disappointing, but thank God it wasn't Inter".
I'm not sure when they started implementing away goal rule, but as far as I remember it always fucked us. Milan in 2003, Villareal in 2006, Valencia in 2007, and Marseille in 2012. Maybe I just remember these and don't recall the times it helped us lmao. But I totally agree with your points, both teams were aware of the rule before the game, that shouldn't be an excuse for their underperformance. The away goal rule was stupid but that rule worked in our favour as well sometimes. We beat Valencia in the quarters 1-0 home and lost 2-1 away that season in CL and we progressed they got eliminated.
Also the rule was the same for us as it was for Milan or any other participant. We were "away" in the first leg so any goal we'd scored would've been massive.
Anyways good riddance of the away goal rule and if we get eliminated because now it doesn't exist I won't complain as it's the right thing to do. 1 goal is 1 goal no matter where it's scored.
It's actually hilarious that Bayern won the group and got PSG, we were runner up and got Porto. No complaints though, we were always unlucky with the draws.
Ronaldo Nazario was the best in his time. Never won CL. There are many factors involved. That's why Guardiola is the best coach in the world.
Probably a better thing than worse for us. We needed a big reset.I already hated the gap between the group stage and knock out games and this season got even worse. Still 60 days to the Porto match.
