Just watched Fenerbahce vs. Lille. Terrible refereeing throughout the match. PK at 116th min, which was waaaaay too soft.

I haven't seen first leg, but from what I've seen tonight, Mou's boys deserved more though.

Game should've been decided on PK's.

You just know we will finally draw Dinamo in CL just to play only game in Milano.

I don’t like that there’s no return legs. So we get a trip away to Anfield for example and never get them at Meazza.

Then if they win we have to hear about it with no immediate retribution.

I'm not disappointed about the new format, apart from it adding two extra games. It might make it more interesting when there are 8 different opponents. And also the common league table which might make it more obscure to see who's going to qualify after MD4 like usually (this is me thinking out loud, don't have any stats how often qualified teams are decided early)

Its 4 extra games for quite many clubs, since clubs that finish 9-24th plays two play-off matches in february to go through to R16. Considering the quality of serie a clubs, i expect all italian teams (except maybe Bologna) to finish among these.

There will be more interesting matches for sure, as all 1st seeded team will face 2 other 1st seeded teams. However the amount of luck involved with the draw is abit much. Imagine getting both City and Madrid as 1st seed matches. The home/away thing is also a problem. There is somewhat a difference in getting say City in Milano and Leipzig in germany, than City in England and Leipzig in Milano. Teams will likely prefer getting the 'easier' games at home and maximize their points there. The latter is very much an issue for italian teams who tends to be dog in away matches in europe.

Sure it's more about luck, but I don't mind.

Making the cup competition less about chance is boring. League is already there for the "boring", very predictable competition so I don't mind having CL having more varinace to balance it out.

Maybe we can get more variance in the teams in the knockout stages then?

I really dont think so. With 2 more group stage matches, probability of surprises in the top 8 will get lower. 9-16th will be seeded against 17-24th, so while small surprises here can happen, i imagine the majority of 9-16 teams will go through in the play-off.

The play-off thing is my biggest problem really. I think its excessive to say the least, the top 8 is seeded against whoever wins the play-off matches anyways. Just let top 8 be seeded against 9-16th and 17-24 go to the EL instead. Its completely unnecessary to have 2 extra KO's games in february.

New system looks very interesting to be fair, it's just silly that there are like 20 teams from the top 4 leagues out of 36.
I'm not sure how it'll be with home and away games, that's just one of the things we'll all dislike.
When Uefa Cup had this system for their groups, they seeded everyone so there was a template.

Europa League also looks promising in terms of who plays there.

And no dropping down to next tier competition is also quite interesting. Been 25 years that we had that so it feels like the normal thing. So Conference League will probably be ugly and we'll have teams from typically extremely unlikely countries winning more often than not.

Didn't know about that one.

29th of August is the day the draw will happen.
