Tbh they should eliminate teams ranked 17-24 entirely from the tournament. What's the point of playing 8 games and sending two third of the total teams to the knockout stage?
More games (more money), more excitement (more money), more confidency that top clubs to make to the knockouts (more money)!

Its ridiculous that there isnt another draw after all R16 teams are found.

Im not a fan of a format where teams can try to predict and avoid by losing, probable opponents based on standings.
That's why I was opposing this not-proper-draw-anymore format. But, on the other hand, there are these draw pairs and the whole bracket is undetermined before those draws are done. If you are 1st or 2nd, you can end up upper or lower side of the bracket, and the same applies to each "position-pair" in the standings. So actually you can't predict your side of the bracket, so losing on purpose doesn't help you.

Okay, technically you can avoid some opponent by losing if you want to drop from let's say 15-16th positions to 19-20th positions. But I think there's a very good chance no coach and team actually ever do that, since having 36 teams in one single standings, there's just too much variability to be able to predict what a loss in the final league stage round will mean to your own position.

Yes, savage part comes from the possible City/Real being there quite low in the league phase ranking.

The most brutal thing is if teams landing at 9-10th gets Real Madrid in the Knockout Playoffs. :D Not much of a prize doing well in the league phase. Assumption is Real (and City) will be better in February than how they are doing now.

Lol, seriously, I mentioned this a little while back as well. It's why I wouldn't fret too much about where in the top-8 we finish as long as we finish in the top-8. We have no control over anything else happening, and seeing some of the clubs currently in play-off round spots, it's entirely random whether you'll end up with a "preferable" draw or not. We're sitting in top-8, we should expect to get to at least 16 points now, from there...whatever.

I'm ok with a 0-0 away vs Leverkusen.
We would be the first team in the history of CL of not conceding a goal in the first 6 games.
Let's go for the record and field a super-catenaccio team with:

Sommer
Darmian-Bissek-De Vrij-Bastoni-Carlos
Dumfries-Barella-Hakan-Zielinski-Dimarco

A splendid 1-5-5
