I'd rate PSV AND Feyenord ahead of Beelan and Rubentus. Mottaball is in denial crisis, think it's still Bologna and draws, but he's calm cuz I think they've assured him he's there to stay. Conceicao got lucky on the supercup and almost showed his true stuff with Parma lol but is gonna come crumbling with his cigars soon

I'm all for RuBe especially with that trojan horse Motta-Interista

Our next CL home game is March 11 or 12. Will try to be there if it is against Milan or Juventus.

Now UCL is already halfway, we already can see its advantages and disadvantages.

The good things are:
  1. Refreshment. IMO the current format is as fair as the old group format, but the new format gives a new excitement.
  2. Unpredictability. This is contrast to the early expectation that more games gives advantage to big clubs. In fact, we get a lot of surprise this season. Not sure if it keeps being unpredictable if the big teams like Barca, Man City or Munich regain their foothold.
  3. Motivation to win. Clubs are driven to keep winning because so many teams are ready to pounce.
  4. Opponents variety. It is nice to meet a lot of new clubs instead of 3 clubs in the group format.
The only bad thing so far is the amount of games. Now it seems we constantly have multiple games a week while it used to be occassional. Perhaps maintaning the Swiss model but reducing the games to 6 instead of 8 might be the solution. But UEFA and clubs only care about the revenue so no way they would do it.

8 games is probably better than 6.

Now that the CL is complete, you can also wait for EL tonight, and get to compare it to the Conference League which had 6 games.
It's similar, but it leaves teams with a sour taste that if they also had 8 games, their luck would have been different because there's like 7 teams that are a win away from 24th spot. In CL there's just 2.

Problem is not with the number of games, but with quality gap between the teams.

It's obviously not about the finances, but does anyone know if you would be better off financially going via the knock out or direct to r16? Like, is our prize money for being in r16 the same as someone who goes knock out then r16? Or potentially even more?

I don't think the potential 1 or 2 millions more is worth the two extra games. Bayern has 80M so far and I'm sure they would rather be top8 right now.

Interestingly enough, goal difference ended up being less important than I expected in this first iteration of the new format, the only club who is getting shafted by the GD is Dinamo - same point's as Brugge and Sporting (and City ), but because of worse GD they are heading home. I thought there would be more teams with equal points.

All in all, I enjoy this new format more, I'm more aware of other clubs unlike before where there were groups that I outright didn't care about at all.
Not so sure about the playoff stage as a concept, unfair for certain clubs to play more games before the knockouts.

I'm sure Guardiola ain't complaining, if only 16 teams went through at this point, City and Juventus would be out already

Oh man! True! We know the date already since we are locked to have the latter game at home.

Spots 9-24 bring you 1M, top8 brings you 2M. Then if you make it to R16 from there, you get the normal 11M prize money like we did now.

But knockout home game brings you gate revenue, so if one can pull off nice 5-7M from that game, it's a nice bonus.

Not worth it for clubs like Inter, of course which has super congested schedule and is fighting for titles.

eah makes sense. thought they might try to do something to compensate the difference, but i agree with you, i wouldnt want to take the extra 7/8m and have extra games + risk being knocked out

just as a data point, our total prize money from the 22-23 CL was 101m euros, so just to get to where we are already is not far off what we made when we hit the final before

8 games is probably better than 6.

I don't think so. More matches mean more chances for top clubs to make up for previous fuckups.

Important to note: wins/draws in KO playoff don't count for club coefficient.

Only thing is we will not know, until I think February 21 when there is another draw, against which club we are playing.
