I don't have a major but I've mastered the science of nothing.

- - - Updated - - -

Bachelors in journalism. I've had some fun jobs and I've had some shitty ones. If my pay didn't get bumped up a few years back, I'd be doing something else. I always looked at big name journalists and how rich they were so I assumed most journalists were like that. Boy was I wrong. Most of us could make more money doing damn near anything else. Had I have known this 15 years ago, I would have never blown money on college and would have just went to trade school.

You should have just open a blog man and skip school.

What kind of journalism do you cover?

I don't have a real major I would say, but in France the thing that really matters is which school you're coming from.

I graduated in Engineering (an engineer degree, it would be equivalent to a Master's degree in Engineering) from "Ecole Centrale" and didn't want to stay the last year to get a major (pointless anyway, we are engineers who have studied a bit of everything and nothing in particular). I did a double degree with "ESSEC Business School" which gave me a Master's degree in Management.

Currently I am a financial analyst in a Private Equity firm thinking about switching to Investment Banking or Strategy Consulting. I will start searching next year and my move will depend on the salary they are offering.

Why'd you do it? They suggested it to me a few years in and I basically said ":yao:"

Slave laborin......I mean gamedev.

How have you been going in that area mate? I remember when I was back at uni a few first year blokes branched off in to game and graphic development in a big way. I was never really in to it and much more in to hardware design and signal processing. I remember one bloke just cracked completely when under pressure in the final year and I lost complete contact with him. Good times...

I master that every weekend. It's a streak not even Brock Lesnar can break.

Political sciences. I worked solely in civil society organizations so far. Poor pay, but I love it.

But feel no pride for having the degree though. I learned WAY more while working, and not only in terms of gained experience, but in theoretical sense as well. The way were thought has been totally outdated. This will sound crazy arrogant and conceited but some papers we did, me and my colleagues, during our final year were better than some works done by some of my professors. And these guys still teach...

You're from France, right? Can I ask you something?

- I heard about Grandes écoles and their master in engineering degree. As you mentioned before, it's a bit of everything, but nothing in particular. But here I want to apply to this program (in the next 2 years):

http://www.telecom-paristech.fr/eng/research/bigdata.html

They have 3 tracks: an engineering program, and the other two are master 2 program. What do you suggest? I want to apply to Master 2 "Maths for big data science" program because it is co-accredited with the Ecole polytechnique. How is it compared to the engineering master program? Which one is better? Which one do I have more chance to apply?

- The reputation of Telecom Paristech in France? It's a grande ecole and part of Paris-Saclay (I heard it'll become no.1 French university in near future?), but its ranking doesn't look good in popular ranking like QS, Times, Leiden, Shanghai.

Currently I'm doing two different master programs at the same time:
- Computer Science: it was my major at undergraduate level, and now I'm studying a master program from University of Bordeaux. Despite that, I feel disgusting. I hate coding (I don't even practice my coding skill, just do it when I have to do assignment or project), and I also hate abstract stuff like algorithms, formal language, compilation, computing theory, etc. Fuck this shit, I have no idea why the fuck I chose this field as my major.
- Production Engineering: this one is from TU Berlin. I'm not supposed to do this because I haven't touched any mechanical stuff in my life, but I somehow managed to pass their entrance exam (that exam wasn't even related to the actual program, it's just a bunch of random questions about math, physics, and some chemical stuff, most people forgot about those stuff, I did not, so I passed :yao:). Now I'm struggling with shitty subjects like machining (turning, drilling, milling, reaming, blah blah), manufacturing technologies, welding, etc. and my lecturers gave us some textbooks that I don't even know what the fuck they are writing about  all students in this class were from engineering fields so they are fine, meanwhile I'm like :eek:blivious::pokerface::chan::yao::trollol:

Right now my life is pathetic, 48 hours/week (both programs combined) just for my classes :palm:

About Telecom Paristech it's a very good school. In France there are the three very big schoools (Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole Centrale and Mines de Paris). Just Below them are Ponts et chaussées and Telecom Paristech.

About the tracks, the Grande Ecole program is by far the most rewarding. If you can get it from one of those schools it's a no brainer. In France there's a really huge difference between a guy who has a Grande Ecole degree and someone who holds a Master's degree from the same school. A lot of positions are exclusively taken by Grande Ecole people. The best positions in the country are occupied by people who holds a Grande Ecole degree from one of those schools (plus graduates from HEC and ESSEC, at a lesser extent ESCP). You can specialize if you can get one of them or do a double degree. A lot of my friends from Centrale went to Caltech, Columbia, the MIT or Cambridge for a double degree. I just wanted the money so I went to a business school.

Now for the Master degree, it's not bad but do it if you're absolutely sure that's the field you want to study. It will make you a kind of tech guy, specialist in your field. If that's what you want it's great. It will be a lot better than a Master's degree from a University, but still way less than a Grande Ecole. The downside is that you won't be able to do something else or to switch fields if you decided to change your mind.

Long story short, if you can get a Grande Ecole programme from Telecom Paris it's a no brainer. You can do everything you want afterwards (management, tech, finance, etc...) and it's a way to top management. The Master is not bad but it will close a lot of doors and it's way less prestigious, although still way better than a Master's degree from a University.

All your degrees sound really useful lol. I have a joint honours BA in American Studies and English :yao: The English side was a mix of linguistics and literature, American studies was the politics, history and culture of the USA (mainly did it for the year abroad, yolo),
Years 1, 2 and 4 were at the University of Nottingham in England, year 3 at GSU in Atlanta, Georgia.

Now I'm a teacher because I didn't know what else I was supposed to do.

@Brancazinho

Thanks for your advice. It clears up a lot of things.

About the double degree, can you please explain more? You have to finish the Grand Ecole program first (in 2 years?), and then spend more years at the same school or others to specialize in a particular field, right? Or can you do both at the same time? What if you want to do a double degree with a foreign school?

I know a data science program which has connection to Telecom ParisTech. I heard that each year they send 4-5 students to Telecom ParisTech for Grand Ecole program.

In the next 2 years, I will (hopefully) have two master degrees: one is master in computer science, another is master of engineering in production engineering and management. So basically, I already have 3 different kinds of major in my background (I did a bachelor in accounting back then but my grade for that program was pretty meh). I just need another one in mathematics (data science track), then go for a PhD in computational science (which is combination of engineering, math and computer science). So I don't know if I should try to apply to Grand Ecole program or not.

I hate technical/scientific fields, but it seems I can somehow manage to survive well in those fields. In exchange I have a pathetic life.
