Zidane is the typical 'flashy player' FIFA choice, that's why people like Maldini never won the FIFA player of the year and such.

You all know how much I hate Juve and dislike Cannavaro, but that prize was his, no doubt about it.

Good point about Gattuso too guys, but Cannavaro has been nothing less than perfect in a role when you can't afford half a slip up, not one mistake, that's just class and confidence at the highest level.

I saw him smiling DURING the penalties shoot-out, I couldn't believe it!

Apparently people voted for Zidane at the end of the first period of extra time, before he went psycho on us.

Well Flashy or not,he had a great tournament, the head-butt aside he is indeed one of the players of the tournament and he does deserve the award based on his performances, and yah he went psycho on materazzi, but we will see what materazzi said to him that made him go psycho.

Zidane had one very good game the entire (guess which one?) tournament and for the rest he was incredibly average. FIFA is a joke when it comes to handing out awards and rankings but that's no surprise. Canna easily should have gotten it but I doubt he cares, having just won the World Cup and all.

In all honesty Frisko, I would have voted for Zidane even after the headbutt.
That headbutt alone deserves admiration.

Yeah sure, that's what he's got from it, admiration, that's what I've heard all day long. "Wonderful stuff Zizou, well done".

I bet the French commentators, fans, players, coach, they were all so proud of him. Give me a break.

Guys don't worry about BlueBacchus, because Italy gave Germany the biggest daddy slapping ever (oh it's true, if Frings was there everything would've changed ) Germany were outplayed, outclassed and were lucky that it even went to extra time. He's just happy an Italian hero like Cannavaro didn't win this joke of an award.

It's okay though, this Golden Ball is meaningless crap anyways. How does 3rd place feel, btw? Did that Grosso goal sting? Oh wait, Italy cheated nevermind. Grosso's goal was put in with his hand folks, watch the replay.

Its really a shame. Fifa has made a policy of not giving the Golden Ball awards to Defenders, but only like giving it to offensive players, and thats the only reason why Zidane won.

After this World Cup, the thought of a team that have the likes of Thuram-Cannavaro as a central pairing is f-cking scary. Thank God Juventus are going to B...perfect timing indeed.

For me it was FIFA's way to say thank you to Zidane, also in the last World Cup the 2nd place team (Germany) also got the prize for best player (Kahn) maybe is the way to FIFA to give something to the losers. Plus both Germany and Portugal got prizes, best young player and most entertaining team, respectively.

I believe this prizes were the way found by FIFA to "compensate" the teams that lost.

That can't be cause the decision was made before the 2nd half of the extra times, so they didn't know who was going to lose, and they also didn't know about the headbutt yet...

Didn't know that, my mistake. But when was it announced? Maybe there was another winner (Italian) and when Italy won they changed their minds, or it could have been, as I said, a "Thank you Zidane".

I don't care what the French commentators, fans, players, coach have to say or think or feel. I specifically stated "I".

LOL, stating things you do not know.
Seen him a few times, and become a fanboy.
Moron, I have been a fan of Zidane since 96, during his time in Bourdeaux.
Don't say things you do not know Moron.
And it will last till the day I die.

Canna for the golden ball all the way defenders don't get enough credit. he made only one mistake the whole tournament that was probably his positioning when france got there penalty which wasnt even a penalty

Zidane was a great player but as the sbs commentator said " It took him 15 years to build this reputation and only 15 seconds to loose it. "

Silly commentator.
15 seconds to lose it?
LOL.
Zidane is going down in history as one of the best, if not the best European and world football players. That commentator destroyed his reputation, if he had any to begin, in 15 seconds with that dumb comment.
