We didn't play well, but we managed not to drop points. Which is paramount at the beginning of the season, as it gives you the necessary tranquillity to work and improve. Like last week, we were too stretched, and I had the impression that our players were less reactive than their opponents, especially in the first hour of the game when we often struggled to keep up with them. I suspect it depends on the different physical preparation (usually lighter) carried out by relegation battling teams compared to ours, but it's to early to say whether my assessment is correct. Anyway, unlike Lecce, Cagliari was willing to take the initiative and push forward. All in all, I'd say our defence (better, defensive organisation) worked well, absorbing their attacks and reducing to a bare minimum the number of their chances. In fact, aside from the goal (which was mainly caused by
D'Ambrosio letting Joao Pedro jump unchallenged), Cerri's chance (generated by a ricochet) and a couple of wishful shots by Nainggolan that landed directly in Corsica, Cagliari were never able to seriously trouble
Handanovic.
Talking about individual performances, I am puzzled by the constant use of a player like
Vecino who, in my opinion, offers absolutely nothing defensively (when was the last time you saw him engage in a duel, tackle an opponent, win a ball back, win a header in midfield?) and is also pretty much useless in attack whenever he doesn't manage to either score or assist. I realise Conte wants to complement the midfield with a more physical player, but when physical prowess doesn't translate into anything concrete, what's the point? I hope
Barella will be finally given the opportunity to start after the international break. Conte said the Sardinian still hasn't fully understood what he's being asked. Maybe it's true, but the fact remains that yesterday the team looked better when he walked in.
Today's game showcased one of the most important problems of our team, which is the lack of creativity in the final third. Basically, the only players who managed to complete a dribbling (and thus create numerical superiority) were
Asamoah and
Sensi. It was no coincidence that they ended up being our best players of the evening. The Ghanaian was solid in defence and a constant threat for Cagliari when pushing forward, especially during the first half. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for
Candreva, who couldn't repeat his Lecce heroics and ended up losing the duel against Pellegrini. As for Sensi, he transitioned effortlessly from a midtable team like Sassuolo to Inter, which is a sign of ambition and self-esteem. The quality is there as well, he just has to keep it up.
Brozovic had a subpar game, which was partially caused by the booking he had to take for the team (memo for Candreva: don't stop running after an opponent just because you think the ball went out of bounds) and the lack of movement around him.
The attack duo didn't have a good game. They showed grit and tried their best to help the team move forward, but ultimately failed to combine or create chances for themselves. They both ended up on the scoresheet, but as I wrote above, we need more creativity in the final third in order to unlock tight defences.
Lukaku missed a goal he shouldn't have towards the end, but managed to keep his cool despite the abuse on occasion of the penalty. It is sad that in 2019 we're still talking about racism. It's even sadder that the big boys in Lega Calcio don't give a fuck about it.
Politano did well in his cameo, harrassing Cagliari's defence with his speed and freshness.
What else to say? the crowd at the Sardegna Arena was shit yesterday. There's supporting your team, and then there's acting like a bunch of brain-dead animals... Maran was also pathetic in his post-game interviews. I'm a little bit sorry because I used to go on vacation in Sardinia every summer when I was a kid and I know Sardinian people are much better than that. Maybe it's just the herd mentality that gets the worst out of people.
