nice piece of trivia that i read on gazzetta.it.

tonight greece-italy, qualification match for Euro 2020, will be played with kick-off time at 20.45 cest.

the latest italian victory against greece was in 1986 (friendly match), it ended 2-0 as a result of bergomi's brace.

Forget what the scoreline says, Italy were poor today specially in the first half. I understand it was Azzurri reserves, but still it was against Liechtenstein! The first half was an even contest, Liechtenstein were unlucky to have no scored. Some of these reserves are not ready to play for the Azzurri yet. Mancini tweaked the tactics in the 2nd half, attacking with more width, and the game turned. 5-0, finally Italy played like Italy.

But the silver lining tonight was that Biraghi had a solid game. He was attacking from the left from the first minute, almost playing like a winger. Very impressed by the lad specially in the 2nd half. If he can play like this regularly, he should be a starter for Inter.

Tonight Tonali,Barella in 1st eleven, Zaniolo on bench. Along with Sensi and Veratti this is the most thrilling midfield to watch. Very promising for Mancini, hope he doesn't fuck it up

I actually credit Mancini, he is the reason some of these kids are playing with maturity and confidence beyond their years. He is giving them a fair chance to start at International level irrespective of their age. This is a very refreshing approach from an NT manager, something that should have happened much before.

I remember how long very talented players like Insigne, Jorginho, etc had to wait to see regular football at International level. Now kids like Donnarumma, Barella, Chiesa, Pellegrini, etc are already in double figures in terms of NT appearances. Mancini is building a great base for the future.

He's done a great job. I just wish we had better options at striker and CB.

Barella starts again, I was hoping he would be rested in this inconsequential game. Conte and Mancini are running this poor kid into the ground!!

Holy fuck! Italy win 9-1. I never thought I would ever see something like this. Specially not this generation of Italy. Mancini is creating something special. 10 qualifiers, 10 wins, 37 goals for, 4 against. Holy fuck!

what i really liked to see is how the group is united. They seem really to have fun. It not feels like they don't care about playing in the national team, which a lot of times happend.

yet according to some people here Mancini doesn't know anything about coaching :eek:blivious:

I think this young Italy might be Mancini's biggest achievement yet, even better than wining those Scudetti with Inter and the EPL with City. Not because of all these silly records this young Azzurri have broken (coz they haven't won anything yet), but in terms of the transformation and the style of play. Mancio has truly re-invented himself and the Azzurri.

Well, if he will reach something important in this years then we can talk again. Conte did a great job with a poor group (good defence maybe but playing with Zaza and Pelle was something where i don't had much hopes). I expect Mancini to do more then him based on what players we have now.

Wasnt Mancini defensive? Italy scored 9 goals for the first time in 70 years.

Come on man. National team managers, generally speaking, aren't of a very high quality. National teams are littered with managers who flamed out at the club level or were never good enough to reach the club level. Mancini is a slightly above average club manager who looks like a genius when he has one of the ten best talent pools in the world to draw on, and doesn't have to rage tactical battles with the likes of Mourinho, Klopp, Pep, or Conte.

I am nothing less than thrilled with the performance by this team in qualification. Mancini has take them from rock bottom and turned them into European contenders seemingly overnight. He has pushed all of the right buttons tactically, appropriately integrated youth (while discarding the older generation), and restore some semblance of order.

With that said, I'm not going to throw a party though. Improving upon work from Ventura isn't an accomplishment - that was a doomed hire from the start. We paved through a ridiculously easy group, which isn't surprising to anyone. Sure, the manner in which we did so was impressive, but it was still a joke of a group. Against real opponents (France, England, Poland, Portugal), Italy and Mancini has struggled,

It's a bit of a paradox - he played those elite teams while he was still implementing his changes to the squad. Perhaps this current iteration of Italy would fair better if they played those teams now. But until they defeat an opponent worth a damn, I will hold off on bowing down to him.

Sorry, I disagree. Conte had a lot of young talent available to him, he decided to ignore it and go largely with mediocre experienced players who suited his style more. Players like Insigne, Verratti, Jorginho, Bernardeschi, Berardi, Florenzi, etc were all considered very gifted, yet Conte focussed on others. He went for short-term-ism, which has been typical of most Azzurri coaches, and left the Azzurri in a worse situation than he found them in. Don't get me wrong, Conte did well with the Azzurri and you will find many posts from me praising his work... but its wrong to say he did not have talent to work with. He just made different choices. If he choose to play Zaza over Insigne and Giacherrini over Bernardeschi/Florenzi, you can't complain he had no talent available to develop.

Mancini made different choices. He focussed on giving talented youngsters regular playing time and develop a new team/squad, and ignore older players like De Rossi, Candreva, Parolo, etc. Players like Barella, Sensi, Zaniolo, Chiesa, Pellegrini, Tonali, etc have grown with the experience in the NT. Infact Zaniolo got a call for the NT even before he had played a single game for his club at the senior level, that in itself defines this new Azzurri. Part of the growth of these kids and the fact that they play with assured confidence actually goes to Mancini, coz playing for the Azzurri at such an young age gives you a different level of confidence. Even players like Jorginho, Insigne, Bernardeschi, etc who have been at the top of their game for a while have become regular starters for the Azzurri only under Mancini, before that they were used as largely bench/rotational players.

IMO Mancini has already achieved more than Conte for the Azzurri, even before playing in the Euro. No one expected this young, experimental side to do so well so soon. Whatever happens in the Euro's next summer will only be a bonus, the real fruit for all this work will probably be seen in World Cup 2022 when many of these kids will mature together and hit their peak.

I agree, they have achieved nothing yet. All these records mean nothing. The only thing matters is how they perform in the Euro or WC. And they haven't played one yet.

I am just commenting upon the transformation in terms of talent and style of play. I have been a Azzurri fan since I started watching football as a kid - 1982 WC was what did it for me. And I have followed Italy ever since, with 2 decades of "golden generations" following by a steady decline since 2006. But in these many decades of following Azzurri, I have never seen anything like this. I think Mancini is building something beautiful, and whether they succeed or fail next summer, there is new life in the Azzurri. It warms my heart. It gives me hope. Forza Azzurri!

Berna was shit and today he's still shit. Which talents? I don't remember good players we had. Florenzi ok, but then? Look how much players we have now. And a lot of players have also more experience now. Like for example Jorginho, Verratti, Sensi, Barella... then we don't had so many talents like now. Like Chiesa, Zaniolo, Orsolini, Tonali.. i don't remember that we had this young players who already made a good impression.

Honestly you can't even say that it was Mancini to call this players. After Venturas failure the FIGC wanted a revolution. Players like De Rossi and Buffon retired , everyone had a chance to play in the national team because there was no other choice. 4 years ago you still had players like Pirlo or De Rossi. Now you are forced to play Sensi or Tonali. So it's even more difficult to say that Conte ignored young players.
