Perhaps I was a litte rude in my original post. My apologies.
I think "uneventful" is more appropriate.
Nothing rude about it, this year's thread is pointless as fucking shit. That said, it must exist.
I say this all the time, but one of my fondest memories from the mercato final days was back in 2010/11. We'd been incessantly (and annoyingly) linked with Lucas Leiva since Benitez took over following Mourinho. At the time of course, we were treble champions and the idea of Lucas Leiva seemed like a bad joke. Finally, some late rumors came through, reporting we were after "Pezzini."
Everyone was like, "Pezzini? You mean P
azzini?" People were excited as Pazzini was one half of a killer Samp duo with Cassano at the time. With excitement steadily rising, it suddenly became known that Pezzini was actually just Lucas Leiva's fucking middle name. I remember the incredulous irritation of that moment, I'm sure shared by many members. Ironically enough we ended up getting Pazzini later that season anyway of course.
Anyway, regarding
this mercato, I've seen a few calcio personalities say things along the lines of "the fact that Inter aren't doing last-minute, deadline day deals is an indication of the great work and planning by Marotta and co."
I agree to an extent.
Considering the budget imposed upon by Suning, we've had a very good mercato - with regards to arrivals specifically. The squad looks good to me, especially taking into consideration the performances of the first two games. That said, a lot will depend on the form and fitness of Vidal, Sensi and Vecino who have all shown usefulness (especially Vidal) in these matches. But if that fitness is inconsistent (which is an entirely realistic possibility considering the recent injury histories of these three) we'll be right back at square one with fucking Gagliardini as first backup and main rotation mid.
My main frustration lies with the root cause of these circumstances (i.e. Suning), but I'm not exactly thrilled with the departures either and I'm not talking about the big sales like Lukaku.
Despite all the credit management receives, I think they need to be judged harsher for the departures. People are being too lenient. We can't sell players for shit unless someone comes in with a significant fee, like they have for Lukaku, Hakimi and Lautaro. Despite the mitigating circumstances I feel like there's no excuses for the incompetence displayed at getting rid of unwanted players. Like it or not, this is an underrated and crucial part of operations as
all clubs have their share of disaster transfers and unsellable deadwood - yet we seem to stand out as being one of the worst in dealing with undesirables.
I feel like they're just fucking cutting shortcuts everywhere to get shit done. Can't sell a player? Loan him out (while paying half his wages) with an option that the buying club is never going to redeem. All that does is kick the can down the road for a year. Can't even loan a player out? Pay him to leave with a fat golden handshake or terminate his contract while copping a fat capital loss. I'm sorry but that's simply not good enough.
Sure, at the end of the day you can say Nainggolan, Dalbert, Joao Mario and Lazaro have all left the club. But consider the fact that two of them are only loaned out and will return, and that we've made ZERO income from any of these fucking creatures. In fact, we've actually copped capital losses from offboarding them.
We were supposed to get €7.5m EACH for Joao Mario and Dalbert. We ended up getting ZERO. Lazaro was, credibly, linked to a 2 year loan plus obligation for 8-9m. The end result? 1 year dry loan, no obligation. What the fuck is that shit? I won't blame management
too much for Dalbert as he refused to go to Trabzonspor (and I bet my house that Lazaro was responsible for the change in deal) but fucking come on.
