Seriously, I'm absolutely surprised by the mood of this thread. I watched the match and the performance we made has definitely eased my wound. Tim, I don't get it. I'm absolutely positive that we were the better team yesterday and don't deserve to lose the second leg. I didn't watch the first leg so I can't say if we deserve to go through or not. Our performance today is like 10 times better than against Perugia!!!
Reading the thread from the start made me laugh though. Zac did exactly what Jimmy told him to do. :dielaugh::howler: Emre in at half time, Recoba in at 55th-60th minute and Lamo in for C.Zanetti.
Well, I think we dominate this game and we definitely have more chance than Marseille to win it. BUT, our finishing is perhaps the worst I have ever seen from Inter, ecspecially Cruz & Almeyda. If only it was Vieri or Adriano and not Cruz, I'm sure we'll be through, not Marseille. Cruz wasted 2 golden opportunities for us. First he was put through by CZ but shot tamely straight at Barthez. The other was when he should have done better on a header which goes just wide, minutes after he missed his first chance.
Martins was poor in this match IMO. Well, it's becoming not a secret that Martins' pace can only be maximized if we are to use the counter-attack strategy. Unfortunately, last night, Marseille acted like a turtle and was too afraid to go out of their shell except for very occasional counter-attacks. Martins also missed a superb chance when he head wide at the far post from a few metres out. Let's not forget Almeyda who had the best chance of the match when he was all alone with all the time in the world and the goal at his mercy from 15 m out only to blaze the ball wildly high & wide.
IMO, Zac didn't do any wrong in this match. Not that I wanna keep him, but he did everything correct. The line-up was good. Even though we gotta score 2 goals to go through, we can't afford to concede a goal so he field the 2 DM accompanied by a lot of offensive players. And when we still fail to score, he took the risk of subbing Almeyda out for a more offensive Emre. VDM IMO wasn't as great as what you may have thought. It wasn't only till the late part of the 1st half that he started crossing. But comparing this performance to the one he made against Perugia, he has definitely improved.
Oh, btw, this will come as a surprise, but we played with 4-4-2. :wth: This is weird but I'm quite sure of this. Cordoba as LB, J.Zanetti as RB, etc etc. At the first few minutes, it looked kinda messy but after awhile, it's definitely evident that we're playing 4-4-2.
The thing that made me sad in this match is not that we can't qualify for the Semis but it's because we lost on a historic night for Javier Zanetti. :depress: Javier Zanetti produced yet another immense, faultless performance. It's unbelievable how consistent our captain is. I dare say that he is one of the best right back of all time. He attacked A LOT while keeping Marseille's left flank dead. Yes, the goal we concede was from the left flank but it was straight of a set-piece situation the players assigned to defend were C.Zanetti and Gamarra.
Let's talk about the goal that we concede. It was a superb goal by Marseille. Classic counter-attack stuff. And the finish was first class, in off the post. C.Zanetti made a mess out of the interception but it wasn't really a howler.
All in all, I think this game had a big big question posed above it: Performance or Result??? IMO, this is definitely one of our better performance this season but the strikers were off-form as they can't finish the chance we created. I'd have chosen result in this game for this is a knock-out stage. Congratulations to Marseille though.
