Our new adventure in the Champions League starts next week. I was thinking about it, and I realised how much would it mean to Mancini to win this competition.
As a player, he went so close to win it with Sampdoria in 1992, against mighty Barcelona, at the glorious Wembley Stadium.
Some information about that game:
Champions League 1992 Final
FC BARCELONA - UC SAMPDORIA
20.05.1992 (19.15) London, Wembley Stadium
Refree: Aron Schmidhuber GER
Barcelona: Zubizarreta (c) - Nando. R. Koeman, Ferrer, Júan Carlos - Bakero,
M. Laudrup, Guardiola (113 Alexanco) - Ensebio, Julio Salinas (65
Goicoetxea), Stoichkov
Coach: Hendrik (Johan) Cruyff HOL
Sampdoria: Pagliuca - Mannini, Lanna, Vierchowod, Pari - Lombardo, Cerezo,
Katanec, I. Bonetti (74 Invernizzi) - Vialli (101 Buso), Mancini (c)
Coach: Vujadin Boąkov JUG
1 - 0 Koeman 112' (free-kick)
Booked: Bakero / Mannini, Vierchowod, Mancini
Topscorers: 7 - Yuran (Benfica), Papin (OM), 6 - Nilis (Anderlecht),
Pančev (Crvena), Vialli (Sampdoria), 4 - César Brito (Benfica), Lombardo
(Sampdoria), Mancini (Sampdoria), S. Mihajlović (Crvena), Stoichkov
(Barcelona)
Barcelona made it third time lucky as they won the European Cup, with Ronald Koeman scoring the only goal against Sampdoria at Wembley with a powerful free-kick. In their previous two appearances in the final, the Spanish side had lost to Benfica in 1961 and Steaua Bucharest in 1986.
Gosh Mancini was the captain of that Sampdoria side! He really went close to a wonderful achievement.
Nowadays Ronald Koeman is Ajax coach, just think at a possible Inter v Ajax final!!!
I hope you can do it with us Mancio! :star:
