There isn’t so much to discuss this week, but I’d like to focus on the rejuvenation of Inter. Results may not have followed in the full form that we expected, but we do see a rejuvenation.
It is refreshing, for once, to see a younger team lining up for Inter, rather than washed up, overpaid, has-been mid-30s veterans. Whilst we will all look towards an improvement in results with hope, it is no doubt that the balance of our side is vastly improved compared to what it was a few months ago.
Let’s call this the rejuvenation. A rejuvenation which has been led by players like Matteo Kovacic, Mauro Icardi – both awarded significantly more responsibility than they were afforded last season – and new signings in Dodo, M’Vila, and even some space afforded to M’baye.
As winter plans are laid in haste in light of mediocre recent results – with Walter Mazzarri potentially up for the sack – focus continues to be youth-oriented. Atalanta player Daniele Baselli, only 22 years old, is one young player earmarked for Inter, as is similarly aged much-needed right back Davide Zappacosta. Add in to the mixer Fabio Borini, and Inter start to take on a distinctly young, and Italian, flavour.
Whether these players are capable of consistently performing to the level Inter require is unknown, but where I have no doubt is that we will enjoy their high levels of energy, and their refreshment of the club. As more of the old guard continually disappoint or are failing to reach their peaks (one could look simply at Palacio, Jonathan and Vidic), rejuvenation of these key spots becomes the focus.
We also need to look further afield to our youth. Francesco Bardi continues to develop out on loan, and Lorenzo Crisetig is consistently playing Serie A football, without even looking further afield.
The results might not be there yet – and whether they ever will be under Mazzarri is unclear – but I’m very much liking the new shape of the squad.
