Idk how long the effect of this will last, but that inaugural season is going to be wild. This will be what finally makes football penetrate the North American market as a major sport.
People keep saying this sort of stuff, and it never happens. As an American, there's nothing more I would love than for this sport to take off in this country, but it still hasn't happened as of yet, even with increasing numbers of MLS teams, having had a World Cup in the United States, far more accessibility to all the big domestic leagues now than there was 10+ years ago, and surely plenty of other things I can't even think of at the moment.
There are plenty of problems I have with a lot of things we see in American sporting models over here, but I will also just say that, at least on the topic of closed circuit competition, that is something that has always existed in sports leagues over here and, like it or not, that's just the way things are, it's what we're used to, it's what our models are based on, and the merit-based aspect of things comes from qualifying for postseason competition to try and win the league's championship. This sort of shit would be like if the Yankees, Cardinals, Athletics, Red Sox, and Giants were all guaranteed playoff positions every season because they have the most World Series championships in the sport. And people here would have an absolute fit of rage over something like that too, I guaran-fucking-tee you that.
I fucking hate the amount of power that American culture has on the rest of the world. Guess what? American culture fucking sucks. Maybe we have two coasts to make it difficult to attack us by sea, but having two coasts should also help keep the crazy contained. Maybe not.
Honestly, seeing the same matches every week is kind of boring. We're going to face the same opponents over and over, I hate it.
Personnaly, I am not that interested in the CL anymore either, I want a return to The true European Cup : You win your league, you're in the CL. Not this fucked up inequality when 5 countries has 50% of the qualifying spot.
I want a Uefa Cup / Europa League that is trully competitive and bring back C2.
I want 90's European Cup basically, when winning C2 or C3 was equally harder and prestigious as winning C1.
I want to take this post and frame it on my wall. I said something similar not that long ago, so I fully agree with you. Unfortunately there's no way of putting that toothpaste back in the tube, but an actual CHAMPIONS League, like the old European Cup was, would be wonderful, and bring prestige back to the UEFA Cup (and CW Cup) as well.
