For whatever reason our team's defensive unit completely lacks fitness at the moment. It is tough for me to tell because I am not at the training ground, but our midfield and CB pairings are all completely lethargic, hesitant, and slow out of the blocks. It could be old age, or it could be the effects of a long season, or a deadly combination of the two.
Nagatomo wasn't trusted at the back, but I don't see why not. We needed his pace as an insurance policy. Get all the boys practicing together, and I don't see why Nagatomo couldn't have done better at LB than Zanetti did tonight. He wouldn't have played Schalke onside for the 3rd goal, that is for sure. Zanetti was worried about his (and his defensive partners) lack of pace, so he was cheating with his positioning. We got punished.
Stankovic not being at 100% must surely be a big part of the reason he screwed up on the first goal. He should have backed up much more, picked up the flight of the ball earlier, and got in front of the defender. Instead, he ended up laying the rebound on a platter for Schalke. If he had not stuck his foot out a Schalke player would have knocked it down, and an Inter defender would have cleared 9 times out of 10, IMO. Or if he had got a better touch on it, of course.
Much of what went wrong was related to deficiencies in fitness and lack of pace, due in large part to old age.
Time to bring in the youngsters! We will need a fullback (Nagatomo and Santon are both good enough, just get another RB, in that case), a CB, and a midfielder who can play all roles. Basically, a young Stankovic or Cambiasso, but a bit more offensive-minded would be perfect.
Cavani to replace Milito would be great for the future, as well.
