Have always viewed the forum but had to make an account today to comment on this disappointing match. At least we're running away with the second star at seasons end. Our weaknesses were shown today IMO. We have 3-4 very top players but a lot of older players and they were exposed in tough hard fought matches like today. Especially Mkhi. The state of italian teams in general aint very promising. No team really has money and with our limits we've done extremely well being the best team over the last 3 years, we arguably gave away last season fighting to the final of CL - I didn't think Napoli was very strong tbh I just don't think we were 100% in for the title as we were in the CL last year. Bilan got a healthy financial budget and they still get slapped regularly, so it's clear buying all young talents isn't the way, but neither is too much age.. Inzaghi has definitely figured out how to conquer Italy but CL is a different ball game. He tried to cantenaccio through this leg and we paid for it, albeit with terrible chances wasted.
We need to refresh the team for next season, while we will have the second star I'm sure teams like bilan will reinforce and they are a very young team, juventus will be there too. Most of all for CL we need more legs IMO. A big sale might be necessary to finance some younger reinforcements. I'm a bit disappointed tbh, because our transfer strategy has been limited. As dominant as we've been in Italy, when you look at our squad other than arguably Lautaro & Bastoni who would fetch us more than 50m? And even then, you sell one of them two we end up with a huge gap to fill. While a team like bilan isn't doing shit they could go out and sell leao, theo, maigan, tomori or those few young mids they have and get 100's of millions to reinvest should the team need an overhaul. Management deserves credit for what they have to work with tbh - I will say that I'm proud of this team but given our form I really didn't see us getting knocked out by Atletico. If anything I saw a difficult semi or final vs madrid, psg or city being the only way out.
Also, I wouldn't say Italy is very 'inferior' to spain nor england. IT's sometimes luck of the draw. Napoli's been in garbage form, Milan had the hardest group, and we were simply unlucky. Last season all the italian teams drew against each other. Milan eliminated Napoli, we slapped Milan, but tbh Inzaghi has Milan specifically figured out. We're a stronger more experienced team than them, but above all else the way we play is Milans cryptonite. They could have eliminated one of the other teams and we could've kicked their asses in the final - again, was the way things played out. Same with Napoli, last season in CL they could've been a wild card but leao felt like playing and basically eliminated them by himself. Had Napoli - milan - inter not drawn against each other we could've had an all italian final easily and easily won. CL requires a little bit of luck is all I'm saying and Atletico had it tonight.
