And now the sad cunt comes crawling back to Eriksen after 9 minutes where he outperformed almost everyone else in the team
Truly pathetic, Conte.
I want to hope that energetic cameo against Shakhtar, and the start that it earned him, will be the turning of the corner for Eriksen. But I'm more pessimistic tbh.
For one, Eriksen came on against Shakhtar when the structure of the game had disintegrated into some frantic, panicked and desperate all-out offense (something we see too often). Much credit to him, he completely kept his cool and did good work amidst the chaos of that shitshow.
But firstly, against Cagliari, we're not going to race out the blocks like that. Chances are, the game will start off a lot more cagey - certainly compared to the last 10 minutes of Inter v Shakhtar.
If we play the same turgid dogshit as usual, Eriksen will struggle. If we stand around playing this "all roads lead to
Rom" strategy and the usual "complainball", Eriksen will be unable to make any impact - and I'm sure Conte will be ecstatic to take that as vindication and an excuse to re-bench him for the remainder of the season.
The team as a whole needs to play with positive intent and a decent tempo. We need to make good offensive exchanges and movements from the start.
Secondly though, Conte is setting him up to fail in this forsaken 3412 which has systematic, fundamental flaws.
For me this is where the Eriksen problem starts. Conte was certain almost from the start Eriksen can't be a part of a midfield trio while Eriksen had played in that role many times at Tottenham and he usually was among their top performers in distance covered. Instead he decided to switch to a system that doesn't suit the team.
I've gone on about just playing Eriksen as CM in the 352 since before he was even signed, but it's true that distance covered isn't enough.
While Eriksen runs a lot, it's generally very light screening. Compare that to Vidal's combativeness in the midfield. At least 2 of our goals in our 4-2 comeback win over Torino came from Vidal physically battling in midfield, winning the ball, and initiating an attack.
That's what Conte wants from his CM's and it seems that's why he won't play Eriksen there. I understand it to an extent, but I still think he should just fucking suck it up and play Eriksen as LCM in the 352 flat. The inherent weaknesses of the 3412 far outweigh any problems stemming from a loss of physicality due to playing Eriksen as CM.
