I'm gonna open this thread already now. Inter is very probably going to participate in this competition. I open this now because this euro season determines the participants from UEFA.

The format is new:
- It's played in the summer (which brings its own deficiencies like less real rest time for the players)
- It will be bigger than the current one
- It's played only every 4 years. FIFA wants to make more money and as World Cup is only every 4 years, they want another tournament to rake up all that money.
- There will be a lot bigger prize money in this competition and the estimations are there would be like 50-100m prize money for each participant team (which might be a bit of BS but who knows, maybe this is funded by some Gulf states?)

Club allocation is as follows:
ACF 4
CAF 4
CONCACAF 4 (+ host USA)
CONMEBOL 6
OFC 1
UEFA 12

For us UEFA is of course the most interesting one. It's still not fully set what's the system is which determines who are UEFA clubs but only details are missing (which are however very relevant to some clubs).
- 4 past CL winners from 2021-2024: Chelsea, Real, City, next winner
- 8 based on rankings
- only 2 clubs per association (exception if more than 2 clubs are winners, EPL has a chance to get 3 if team outside of United/Arsenal wins this season)
What's unclear is the ranking of those 8 remaining clubs. There are allegedly two candidates. One is UEFA coefficient ranking with the said CL winners excluded of course. Another one is this same kind of coefficient ranking but only points gathered from CL participations are included.

Pure UEFA coefficient option ranking
  1. Bayern Munich (GER) – 90,000 points
  2. Rome (ITA) – 75,000 points
  3. PSG (FRA) – 70,000 points
  4. Villarreal (ESP) – 69,000 points
  5. Inter (ITA) – 65,000 points
  6. Leipzig (GER) – 60,000 points
  7. Porto (POR) – 59,000 points
  8. Benfica (POR) – 59,000 points
  9. Seville (ESP) – 58,000 points
  10. Juventus (ITA) – 58,000 points
  11. Borussia Dortmund (GER) – 57,000 points
  12. Barcelona (ESP) – 54,000 points
  13. Feyenoord (NED) – 53,000 points
  14. Naples (ITA) – 52,000 points
  15. Ajax (NED) – 51,000 points

Only-CL option ranking
  1. Bayern Munich (GER) – 90,000 points
  2. PSG (FRA) – 70,000 points
  3. Inter (ITA) – 65,000 points
  4. Porto (POR) – 57,000 points
  5. Borussia Dortmund (GER) – 57,000 points
  6. Leipzig (GER) – 52,000 points
  7. Atletico Madrid (ESP) – 51,000 points
  8. Benfica (POR) – 49,000 points
  9. Barcelona (ESP) – 47,000 points
  10. Juventus (ITA) – 47,000 points
  11. Seville (ESP) – 42,000 points
  12. Salzburg (AUT) – 39,000 points
  13. Ajax (NED) – 39,000 points
  14. Milan (ITA) – 37,000 points
  15. Naples (ITA) – 33,000 points

As said, in both cases Inter is pretty much secured its place in the cup.

- In the 1st option, it isn't realistic Feyenoord or Napoli can reach Inter's points, but technically Milan or Napoli COULD win CL (quite unrealistic aswell).
- In the 2nd option, we are practically in. Even Juve has a good chance getting in. Milan/Napoli would need to have a monster CL run to get past Juve, possible (for Napoli) but unlikely.

Is there a way we can just opt out of wasting time playing in this?

Calcio e Finanza reports that some yet another new ranking has been proposed. Neither of those UEFA coefficient rules based but a modification of it. Let's first repeat what's the current system in CL:

participation => 4p
victory (group stage) => 2p
draw (group stage) => 1p
round of 16 => 5p
quarters => 1p
semis => 1p
final => 1p

New proposed system would be:
participation => 5p
victory (group stage?) => 3p
draw (group stage?) => 1p

Ranking with the new system would be:
  1. Bayern – 102,000 points
  2. PSG – 73,000 points
  3. Inter – 70,000 points
  4. Porto – 63,000 points
  5. Borussia Dortmund – 62,000 points
  6. Barcelona – 59,000 points
  7. Juventus – 52,000 points
  8. Benfica – 49,000 points
Leipzig at 58p, Atletico at 51p, Sevilla 47p, Milan at 39p, Napoli at 38p

To me this is absolutely ridiculous that they don't even have the system ready for the participation while the season affecting the outcome is underway. To me this sounds like they want to find a system to get Barcelona in the tournament (possibly Juventus too, but Barca being the clear beneficiary of this system change).

AFAIK we're unofficially qualified to this tournament. Unofficial because it's still not announced what's the system is to get qualified. :D

Yes if total coefficients were counted. But they weren't. FIFA/UEFA decided it'd only coefficients from CL games.

Not yet.
"In January 2024, it was reported that the tournament would take place on the East Coast to be closer to European broadcasters and viewers while also avoiding conflict with the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will also take place primarily in the United States around the same time but on the West Coast."
