Toldo still No 1, say Inter
Thursday 7 July, 2005
Inter President Giacinto Facchetti has told Francesco Toldo that he will be the club’s No 1 ‘keeper in the new campaign.
There were doubts over the veteran’s future at the San Siro, given his difficulties last term, but the Italian is set to be given a key role again.
"Toldo will be the goalkeeper next season," stated Facchetti. "When we conceded a lot of goals last term, it just seemed like it was his fault.
"However, in the last five months when we conceded fewer goals than Juventus and Milan, it was because of him.
"You need balance in a side and when we found that it gave the goalkeeper more protection."
The former Fiorentina hero was dropped for a period last term by boss Roberto Mancini, fuelling rumours of a possible exit.
But the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza outfit still have confidence in the Euro 2000 star, especially after allowing his possible replacement Sebastien Frey to leave Parma for Fiorentina.
"Toldo is a great goalkeeper," added Facchetti. "There are few shot-stoppers in the world at Francesco’s level. He is still one of the best around."
GOOD NEWS FOR ME, FRANCESCO TOLDO IS THE BEST KEEPER FOR INTER RIGHT NOW
FORZA TOLDONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
