MAZZINTER – FIVE REASONS TO BELIEVE
1. Mazzarri: after Mourinho, he is the most reliable coach.
2. Handanovic: one of the best in the world.
3. The wing plays where Isla is perfect.
4. Kovacic: to be like Hamsik, with footwork and vision.
5. Forwards of the past (Milito) and the future (Icardi-Belfodil)
What if Inter are worthy of the Scudetto? Before answer this question, let’s paint the picture of Italian football. Juventus signed Tevez. Napoli of Benitez intrigue us more and more daily. Fiorentina have had a great transfer season. Milan will have Honda in the winter. Roma and Lazio have strenghtened themselves in someway. Yes, that is basically what you need to know. At Inter however, for the first time since the days of Jose Mourinho, the club is working on a loud and clear football idea. The future in management, and we are referring to the possible transfer of ownership from Moratti to Thohir, is an uncertainty but on the field it is a different story.
1. M for Mazzarri
Abstract: Inter were ranked 9th in the standing even behind Catania and were out of all competitions. It will not be hard to improve but the club is not required to win the Scudetto either. Let’s say that if the club can be fifth by the end of next season, it will be a success. Yet, we have another year zero post 2010 Champions League. Of all the coaches hired after Jose Mourinho, Walter Mazzarri is the most reliable, the most defined. Rafa Benitez had never coached in Italy. Leonardo came from Milan and was in a transition period. Gian Piero Gasperini was a gamble and Claudio Ranieri was just a temporary fix. Andrea Stramaccioni had only worked with the young kids at most. Mazzarri arrived at Inter due to the impressive resume and sporting merits accumulated throughout his career. His football is compatible with the history of this club. Helenio Herrera, Giovanni Trapattoni, Jose Mourinho: this is the trend. Mazzarri at Milan would have found himself struggling to gain acceptance. Milan have different traditions with coaches like Arrigo Sacchi who pursued fast and engaging football. Inter, however, are prone to suffering, sacrifice, sweat and today in Italy, there are two coaches who refuse to forget about this: Antonio Conte and Walter Mazzarri. We do not expect a beautiful and seductive Inter but we do expect an Inter that is always in the game and never in confusion like the many times last season with Andrea Stramaccioni. This is a great place to start and who knows how high in the standings Inter can be at the end.
2. H for Handanovic
Great teams have great goalkeepers. There are exceptions – for example, the total football of Netherlands with Jongbloed – but the rule applies to the majority of cases. Inter goalkeeper is Samir Handanovic and the competitiveness of Inter would fall if the Slovenian was to be sold. “Handa” is possibly the only “big” player at Inter, one that can guarantee a lot of cash for his club. Doing so will be woeful however as it would open a chasm of negative effects for Walter Mazzarri. Today, in our world, who is better or even on par with Handanovic? Neuer and Buffon. Not many people would give him up for Cech or even Casillas. Maybe for the 21 year-old Belgian Courtois, the destined hair of Cech at Chelsea.
3. E for esterni (wingers)
Walter Mazzarri’s football is born on the wings. The coach always maximizes wing players and his players in those positions are fundamental. They are expected to cover 80 meters of the field and must do that well. In this squad, there are wingers that did very badly last season but signals from Pinzolo are that Nagatomo is doing very well. And of course we have the arrival of Mauricio Isla. The Chilean is perfect for this club after the years in Udine where he showed technical excellence as well as a lot of running and speed. He is very flexible and can also play as a central midfielder. The player smashed his right knee a year and a half ago and the following season at Juventus, Isla did not play well as expected. If Mazzarri and trainer Giuseppe Pondrelli can get him back to the pre-injury levels, at least the right wing is set.
4. K for Kovacic
The K factor. Mateo Kovacic, 19 year-old Croatian, arrived at Inter on January 31. During these months, it’s been understood that he is very good with great footwork and vision but there is a lot of discussion on what his true position is. There are those that see him as a registra while others believe he would do better as a trequartista like Boban. Mazzarri has made it clear that “he will play behind the strikers like Hamsik.” The same Hamsik then said: “Unfortunately, Mazzarri will bring Inter to the top again.”
5. C for central forwards
The past (Milito) and the future (Icardi and Belfodil) intersect. Il Principe is set to return from injury (a few more months however) while Mauro is ready to shine. Many scouts believe that Belfodil has shown great potential and also growth over the years. Not to mention player like Palacio who is all about movement and this is the type of player Mazzarri really likes.
P.S. The sixth reason to believe in the Scudetto is Inter will not play in Europe, just like the first season of Antonio Conte on the Juventus bench.
