Admittedly, the 5:15am kickoffs in Australia are taking their toll and I presently feel like curling up to sleep under my desk at work.
I thought this was a hard and well earned win. The game was not pretty, but we grafted to get the three points without conceding and making fools out of ourselves as we have done in other matches when we have had to defend a lead. The way we came out in the early minutes was fantastic: focused, concentrated, determined, pushing and working with intensity to get a lead. I thought we had great momentum and that Napoli were going to find it hard to contain us. However, once we scored that pace slowed down and the door opened for Napoli to gain a foothold. Having said that, I did not expect us to play at that pace and intensity for the whole game.
In terms of individual performances, I thought Bastoni was one of our best players. He plays with maturity and confidence beyond his years and the manner in which he anticipates and interprets the game is special. Bastoni has been one of the best stories coming out of this season and for once, it is great to see a young player develop and blossom into a first team starter.
D'Ambrosio quietly goes about his game. He is not a star player nor is he fancy but he is consistent and always gives his best. The lead up play to his goal was fantastic. As the move was developing, he put his hand up to receive the pass and buried it beautifully. The great thing about D'Ambrosio is that he will do his best to be there for his teammates and his goal was just reward for his efforts.
I thought Borja played a good game and made every effort to help his teammates until he was substituted and replaced by Eriksen. Unfortunately for the latter, Borja is presently everything that Eriksen is not in the sense that he plays with urgency, puts in the hard yards, and works for his teammates. To date, Eriksen has been an ineffective liability and a few nice corners and set pieces is not going to detract from the fact that his teammates have to work doubly hard when he is on the pitch. It's kind of laughable. Many of us thought he would walk into our eleven but Borja is very much keeping him from playing. I was watching him come on the pitch towards the end of the game and I kind of felt sorry for him as his role has been reduced to cameo appearances at the end of games.
For many of our past encounters with Napoli, Koulibally has been difficult to play against. Lukaku has his critics on here but it was good to see Koulibally on the back foot for a change and see him out muscled and at times out manoeuvred. In terms of his game this morning, it was more about his work rate, effort and contributing to the team than it was about goal scoring. Perhaps the standout moment for Lukaku in this game was the ball he passed from around the halfway line that split the defenders and setup a one-on-one for Alexis (I think it was).
Since the resumption and returning from injury Alexis has been our standout player. He looks fit, hungry and happy to be playing. But perhaps the best part about having him in the eleven is that he provides a spark that has been missing upfront since the Martinez to Barcelona rumours started. Watching Martinez replace him and the manner in which the latter played, I could not help but feel that Martinez has finally grasped that he cannot take his position for granted and that he is going to have to put up a fight if he wants to continue to be a starter. Alexis is the pressure and motivation that Martinez needs to get his shit together.
And lastly, I would just like to mention Martinez’s goal which was beautiful: poetry in motion. I thought he was going to pass it out wide and make a move into the box. He struck it beautifully and with the kind of confidence that has been missing since the early half of our season. I love the guy and hope we will offer him an extension and do our upmost to keep him at the club for next season and in the years to come.
