Don't know how I didn't notice this post earlier, so here goes.
Cambiasso has shown to be capable as a starter depending on the opposition. Against a qyualit fast counter-attacking team he's almost completely useless though. Roma have actually played more of a possession based game for most of the season, but Rudi Garcia out-thought Walt and literally let us have the ball, and that has always been a weakness of Mazzarri teams. Napoli were often frustrated by teams that gave up the ball and just hit on the counter as the whole overloading in wide areas isn't that effective against teams that defend in numbers. What's worse is with our lack of speed we're never comfortable against good counterattacks.
The fact is that we lacked productivity on the ball and we should've adopted a distinctly attacking approach to this game. It was clear as crystal that this match wouldn't result on the ball, and that Pjanic and Strootman would filter the attack to their focal point (in this case Totti).
Mazzarri got his tactics completely wrong. It is true that his sides typically struggle against counter attacking teams, but I think we had the resources to win this match.
Cambiasso's presence is similar to that of a CB in the midfield. Just breaks up play, but is largely unproductive in its distribution. Worse yet, Mazzarri surrounds him with aggressive box to box midfielders with no creative prowess.
Tbh I would've played Taider out of position in Cambiasso's berth, with Kovacic and Guarin above him, and if we keep conceding, change to a more offensive tactic. Roma's defence isn't very strong, especially with players such as Castan, Balzaretti, and Torosodis in their back four. What makes them effective is their defensive and offensive persistence, continually pressing the opposition and pouncing on oppurtunities to send the ball to either Pjanic or Strootman.
Imo we should've really focused on pressing those two players. That way the link between the offence and the defence would've been broken, and they would be very unproductive and desperate on the ball, trying to figure out a way to get the ball to the likes of Totti or Florenzi.
I agree that Pereira is beyond useless right now, but I do get the feeling that it's largely a confidence thing.
I don't think he is suited to a wingback position or role in a team, and I don't think his performances will improve tbh. He's shown his poor decision making time and time again, and tbh his value will likely depreciate in the coming years, so I'd sell him now.
I personally feel that Nagatomo and Jonathan are good enough to be starters against most teams. They deserve to be trusted based on their form so far this season, I certainly wouldn't mind an upgrade on both, but good wingbacks aren't that easy to come by.
Statistically speaking, Nagatomo and Jonathan have been great. But judging by the quality of their performances, considering the opposition they've come across, I really think we need an upgrade, ESPECIALLY if we are serious about challenging for 3rd place this year.
Making that investment would be worthwhile tbh; Milan spent 20 million on Balotelli last year which was offset by the CL revenue they received from reaching that 3rd berth in the league. We need to take a similar risk, because I don't think we currently stand much of a chance against the likes of Juventus, Napoli, Roma, and even FIorentina and Milan considering the quality and depth of our squad and the simplicity and repetitiveness of Mazzarri's tactics.
Also, anyone getting on Nagatomo's ass today need to remember that he is a LB or LWB, but he was forced to play on the right. It simply doesn't suit him
Actually Nagatomo's naturally a RB. He was converted to a LB here at Inter, given Maicon's presence on the right in 2011.
