10 years of FIF
So, things are not going exactly as expected this season. Our goal was never the scudetto, but the horrible defeat at Tottenham and the hard strugle we'll have until the end of the season with Milan and Lazio for the Champion League spot just underline our squad is lacking in quality.
Just a quick recap:
2009-10: Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League winners
Most usual eleven: JC, Lucio, Samuel, Maicon, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Thiago Motta, Deki, Sneijder, Milito, Eto'o
2010-11: 2nd place in Serie A, Coppa Italia winners, eliminated in the quarter-finals by Schalke in CL
Most usual eleven: JC, Lucio, Chivu, Maicon, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Thiago Motta, Deki, Sneijder, Milito, Eto'o
2011-12: 6th place in Serie A, eliminated in the round of 16 by Napoli in Coppa Italia, eliminated in the round of 16 by Marseille in CL
Most usual eleven: JC, Lucio, Samuel, Nagatomo, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Obi, Alvarez, Sneijder, Milito, Pazzini
2012-13 (so far): 5th place in Serie A (one point behind Milan in 3rd), playing the semi-finals vs Roma in Coppa Italia (down 2-1), on the verge of elimination by Tottenham in EL (down 3-0)
Most usual eleven: Handanovic, Rano, Juan, Nagatomo, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Gargano, Guarin, Alvarez, Cassano, Palacio/Milito
Our current full squad (29 players):
GK:
Handanovic - 28 yrs
Castelazzi - 37 yrs (long term injury - season end)
Carrizo - 28 yrs
Belec - 22 yrs
CB:
Rano - 25 yrs
Juan - 21 yrs
Samuel - 34 yrs (returning from medium term injury)
Chivu - 32 yrs
Silvestre - 28 yrs (medium term injury)
WB:
Zanetti - 39 yrs
Nagatomo - 26 yrs (short term injury)
Pereira - 27 yrs
Jonathan - 27 yrs
Mbaye - 18 yrs
MF:
Cambiasso - 32 yrs
Guarin - 26 yrs
Kovacic - 18 yrs
Kuzmanovic - 25 yrs
Gargano - 28 yrs
Deki - 34 yrs (returning from long term injury)
Obi - 21 yrs (long term injury)
Mudingayi - 31 yrs (long term injury - season end)
Benassi - 18 yrs
WF:
Alvarez - 24 yrs
Schelotto - 23 yrs
FW:
Milito - 33 yrs (long term injury - season end)
Palacio - 31 yrs
Cassano - 30 yrs
Rocchi - 35 yrs
And what can be expected from the next mercato so far, according to the more concrete rumours:
IN
Laxalt (23 yrs WF from Uruguay): around 3m
Campagnaro (32 yrs CB from Napoli): free transfer
Andreolli (26 yrs CB from Chievo): free transfer
Icardi (20 yrs CF from Sampdoria): 15m
Botta (23 yrs AM from Argentina): free transfer
Peruzzi (20 yrs WB from Argentina): around 3m
Longo (21 yrs on loan to Espanyol): return from loan
OUT
Rocchi: retirement
Silvestre: mandatory purchase from Palermo and subsequent sale
Jonathan: sale for 2-3m
Castelazzi: retirement
Mudingayi: return from loan
Samuel: probable retirement (fuck)
So, main formation could be:
While all players avaiable by position (30 players):
GK: Handa, Carrizo, Belec
CB: Rano, Juan, Campagnaro, Andreolli, Chivu
WB: Zanetti, Nagatomo, Pereira, Peruzzi, Mbaye
MF: Cambiasso, Guarin, Kovacic, Deki, Gargano, Kuzmanovic, Obi, Benassi, Botta
WF: Alvarez, Schelotto, Laxalt
FW: Milito, Palacio, Cassano, Icardi, Longo
How do you feel about this supposed squad for 2013/14? Is it enough to fight for the scudetto/CL spot?
IMO, it's an improvement since we are not really losing anyone useful (with the exception of Samuel if he really retires - which I hope he doesn't) and add a few more reasonable players. We'd have much better "second options" (and this is important given the age and the number of injuries we are facing) but I can't see this as gamechanging.
