I don't understand why Perez is being such a dick. He let Ronaldo go willy nilly, but for Modric it's the end of the world...He's almost 33, won everything there is to be won. Experiencing burnout is completely normal.
He has all the funds to get a replacement, and build a new Real Madrid, but no...he has to act like fucking George Constanza hiding from Steinbrenner under his desk.
Obviously fuck Perez, but his stance isn't entirely unreasonable.
1. The economic tradeoff isn't worth it to him. Whatever money we'd pay for Modric Perez likely considers as both insufficient in general and not satisfactory compensation to losing the best midfielder on the planet. Juve paid much more for Ronaldo and Madrid can also take his gargantuan wages off their books. We'd be paying less for Modric and his wages are extremely manageable for Madrid, even moreso with Ronaldo's departure and the lack of any high-profile signings bar a goalkeeper Courtois.
2. Performance and stability. Say what we like, the truth is Madrid did just lose their record-breaking coach and record-breaking star player in a very short period of time. Losing one or even two might be acceptable, but three is crossing the line in their eyes. Again, imagine we somehow won this seasons scudetto and Spalletti resigned. OK. Then imagine Icardi was sold for a offer we couldn't refuse. Fans would already be losing their fucking minds, but then imagine Perisic or Brozovic wanted to leave? Even if Madrid have fucktons of money and they could afford expensive replacements, it's hard to argue that losing a proven winning coach and two key players in the span of 3 months is a difficult transition to say the least.
