Brozovic needs a defensive partner that plays their position. Vecino/Gagliardini are not them. If Borja was younger he'd be fine as they are similar players.
Barella is exactly the type of player we need, the only issue is, we won't win many balls in the air in the midfield.

I was very impressed with Barella against Inter (though everyone has it great when they play us).

However Barella was playing high up the pitch, doing the role that Nainggolan does for us. Is this a regular position for him?

Barella normally plays LCM, 2-way midfielder. Not ball carrier like broz and not AM or main attacking mid either. I think over the past month or so he's been pushed up a little more, but against us, he was definitely deployed higher up and was playing pretty much the best I've seen him play this season.

Agreed. He also scored two pens against juve in that Coppa Italia semi final in 15/16. He normally goes to his right and obviously the keeper read it. First time I've ever seen him miss a penalty out of the 5 or 6? that I've seen him take. I'm far more disappointed with the rest of his performance than the penalty miss - sloppy in possession, defensively negligent. Very poor game from him.

I am not a die hard fan of Gagliardini, but why people don't realize that Gags actually had to miss majority of the season because Spallo included Vecino to the CL list and hence had to play the latter in both serie A and CL in order to build the chemistry?

He was very good in the second half of the last season playing the defensive partner of Brozo. He can regain his shape back but it requires some regular practice on the pitch. You can read it in Brozo's face how happy he is when he plays along with Gags, he kinda look relieved whenever Vecino is benched.

I was ok with him taking it as he's generally good. I actually wouldn't expect him to be that good of a PK taker as typically a player needs a cool head and Brozovic tends to lose his cool constantly. I'd probably pick Perisic as the penalty kick taker to be fair.
