This chelsea-Essien saga has gone on a long time.

Lyon would settle for no less than 45 million euros To me thats crazy!!!

I think Emre, Pizarro, Stankovic are all better then him, i can name 100 more and all of them were not worth more then 10.

I got a feeling this guy will be sold to Chelsea for such a big sum and he will be a flop, so much pressure. The guy is not even that good to get 45. bloody hell.

Lyon only ask for that crazy sum of money because they have realized that Chelsea or shall I say mr vodkamovic is prepared to pay such absurd sum.
Obviously Essien is not, and for that matter no one with his track record is really worth that much. I also have a feeling he will end up playing for the blues.

I think even Tiago is better than him.
I mean Essien showed some great touches @ Lyon, but things change @ a big club. Tiago was decent for Chelsea early, but towards the end of the season he was brillant, his performance @ the Nou Camp was great, not to mention his passing and his game against United.
Very good player.

Jean-Michel Aulas has hinted that both Arsenal and Manchester United are trying to hijack Chelsea's bid for Lyon midfielder Michael Essien.

Chelsea have been at the forefront of the race to sign the Ghana international and have spent the best part of a month haggling with the French champions.

The Blues' most recent bid of £21 million for the 22-year-old was rejected as Lyon hold out for a fee of £30 million.

Lyon chairman Aulas is due to meet Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich in the coming days as the Premiership champions look to add Essien to their squad ahead of the new season.

Essien is keen to move to Stamford Bridge but Aulas has now muddied the waters by claiming there is further interest from The Premiership in his club's prize asset.

Speaking after Lyon started the defence of their title with a 2-1 victory over Le Mans, Aulas told his club's official website that United want to sign Essien, who had a trial at Old Trafford earlier in his career.

"It is tedious to lose one of the best players in Europe but he has not left yet," said Aulas.

"We can still find a compromise so that he only leaves next year.

"Chelsea will have to show themselves to be very persuasive for us to let him leave.

"Manchester want him just as much."

But in a separate interview after the game at Le Mans, Aulas suggested that Arsenal are hoping to snare Essien to replace Patrick Vieira.

Essien missed the game against Le Mans due to a stomach complaint and Aulas revealed Chelsea's failure to agree a deal for the African could see them miss out to their London rivals.

He added: "This Essien story does not weary me. Perhaps it will be solved on September 1 and not on July 31.

"I have more resistance than some people have imagined.

"The more Chelsea will wait, the more they will be put in difficulty, not just compared to Lyon, but also compared to another English club which has just lost a defensive midfielder."

Well, I'm just thankful that they do not sign Gerrard and thus become invincible. As for Essien, I personally think that he's not worth the money but if I were Peter Kenyon, I would just slap Mr. Aulas with 32 million Pounds. After all, what is 5-7 million Pounds to the Roman Abramovich? He probably made that kind of money just from his annual bank interest. :p If Essien can join the club faster, he can integrate to the team faster. But if you ask me, as Catanha said, I prefer Tiago, who is a great midfield with a mix of flair & hardwork. :star:

Essien is just as hard working. But dont forget, i think they see Essien as a long term solution to be backup for Makelele, who is 32-33 now?

So they need cover there, and Tiago wouldnt do aswell as Essien in that spot.

Well, as long as they don't notice Cambiasso's rise into the throne of the soverignity of the DM Empire, I could care less who's replacing Makelele. :p Seriously, I'm not sure if Essien will do well in Makelele's spot, but yeah, you have a good point. ;)

'I am totally disappointed about what is happening and I feel very let down by Lyon. This is turning into a nightmare for me and I cannot understand why they are acting this way.

'I have made it clear to them that I will not play for them again. From now on I am training with the junior players and I will not take part in any first-team matches for them - they know that.

'Chelsea are the only team I wish to play for. I have heard the Lyon president saying other clubs from the English Premiership are interested in signing me, including Arsenal and Manchester United, but I have no desire to play for anyone else other than Chelsea.

Look at it from his point of view...They know they will let him go but they are trying to milk it as much as possible because its Chelsea, risking the poor lads future..

Where is the dignity in that?
