Opinion: Hey Jose, Shut Up And Coach!

Often times when you meet people, their style and attitude really make you gravitate towards them but sometimes after knowing them for a while that same style and attitude makes them annoying to the point that you are repelled and would rather have an itch you can’t scratch. Chelsea Coach Jose Mourinho has reached that point, argues George Metellus...
In the beginning his candor and willingness to trade verbal darts with English football coaching fossils Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were refreshing and a sign of the changing of the guard. The new guard has a fantastic coaching resume: 1 UEFA Champions League title, 1 UEFA Cup title, 2 Portuguese SuperLiga titles, and a Portuguese Cup all within the span of the last 2 years before taking control at Stamford Bridge, so he has certainly earned the right to talk some trash, but over the course of the season he has gone from refreshing and youthful to arrogant and annoying. Over the past couple of months the Portuguese manager has become nauseatingly hemorrhoidal, a massively irritating pain in the butt.
Examples: He cried twice, making false allegations of “improper contact” between referees and opposing coaches:
First, The Carling Cup, Semi-final 1st leg against Manchester United & Alex Ferguson, comments leading to an “improper conduct” charge by the FA. Match Result: a 0-0 draw. Second, UEFA Champions League, 1st Knockout stage 1st leg against Barcelona & Frank Rijkaard. The alleged action so upset Jose that Chelsea players & management refused to attend the post-game press conference. Match Result: a thorough 2-1 beating.
His bold “Quadruple Trophy” announcement goes down in flames after a 5th round FA Cup exit to Newcastle and then in front of the aforementioned Champions League fixture he highlights the fact that Frank Rijkaard’s coaching resume is far less impressive than his own, in a condescending manner. Although Rijkaard’s coaching resume is not as impressive as Mourinho’s, it is not necessary to trash an excellent coach’s accomplishments and he must not forget that Frank Rijkaard’s accomplishments as a player are far more impressive than Jose’s coaching accomplishments. Match up resumes - Jose’s coaching vs. Frank’s playing - and Jose looks like he is only qualified to train 5-year olds at a youth academy. Oh by the way, Mourinho’s number of appearances on a professional football pitch as a player = 0.
Just recently Sir Bobby Robson, Jose’s mentor from his days at Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, & Barcelona, commented that Mourinho should learn to be a good loser. Even when Jose wins he screws it up. Take the “Finger Silence” gesture in the Carling Cup victory over Liverpool, he said it was meant for the press but those that understand the heat of a massive cup final know that the gesture was directed at the Liverpool faithful. I don’t mind players taunting the crowd because they are the ones scoring the goals, taking the tackles, and absorbing the brunt of verbal abuse from fans; but coaches who have never played a minute of pro ball need to keep their crowd taunts to themselves and limit their celebrations to fist pumping and assistant coach hugging.
There is not enough space on this website to document the number of times Jose Mourinho has run his mouth and now the football world is starting to become annoyed by his actions & comments. What was once new & different is now tired and common. I love sports figures that talk trash but there comes a time when enough is enough and a person has to just shut the hell up and perform. If Jose does this maybe he can go back to being the person whose style and attitude made the football world gravitate towards him. Mourinho is a GREAT coach and Chelsea can win two more trophies to finish the season with an impressive treble. But he’s got to just SHUT UP AND COACH!!
