well that's Trier for ya.. his movies are so provocative and somewhat repulsing that you're left wondering where the heck that truck came from, because that feeling you have in your stomach couldn't possibly come from a movie.

whether it's nausea or pure sadness, you always have a feeling of being run over after each of his movies, in the sense of the exaggeration of these feelings.. like in Dancer in the Dark, which is, albeit somewhat extreme, a movie that makes you shed a few tears to say the least.

It is similar to Funny Games by any chance?

I actually have never seen the original of that film, which I assume is the one you are referring to, so I cannot really compare them. But Antichrist is surely one of the most graphic films I have seen. Filled with sex, self mutilation and other things that just make you cringe...

But it is very different than films like Hostel or Saw that make you cringe with graphic material also...it is kind of hard to explain...from what I have heard, von Trier's other film, Dogtown, is just as gruesome...

This was my first time experiencing von Trier and it was an unforgettable feeling. It was like seeing a Kubrick, Tarantino or Lynch movie for the first time. You sense that this director has set himself apart from the norm....when I regain my composure, I plan to watch it again...should be ready to go in a few years :p

There are directors and then there are really filmmakers who are making art...Lars falls into the latter category

Personally, I have difficulties defining him, because his movies are as pretentious as can be, unlike Kubrick or Lynch. But on the other side, all of his movies are relatively unique. Where I see a problem in putting him in that exclusive category, is that he's not really a pioneer, comme Kubrick. Even if his movies are unique, they do not really introduce anything new to the medium (I know, it sounds contradicting).

What was unique about Dancer in the Dark? It was a musical, and it had an extreme use of DV-cameras (100s were used on the same time in each of the music scenes, compared to the single DV-camera Lynch used for Inland Empire). It was extremely melancholic, anti-hollywod. The plot wasn't very unique. Our protagonist has a goal and some (actually a shit load of) problems.

Antichrist wasn't really that unique either. What I liked about it was it's visual side, which without a doubt was it's force. But having seen the likes of "Don't Look Now" it wasn't that original either. Also, you could hear how depressed Trier was when he wrote that script. The dialog is between his depressed side wanting to commit suicide, and then his more cynical side. Was rather tiresome, but the amazing acting and wonderful pictures (and musical score, of course) made up for it.

Have you seen Breaking the Waves?...I enjoyed that at least as much as I did Dancer in the Dark...Hard to categorize directors in specific categories but he's a visionary in what he does, IMHO...There are not a lot of those anymore...We see a lot of cookie cutter film work done these days...No one who really pushes the envelope or gets us to think outside the box...I don't enjoy all of LVT's films but I know going in he will not be like everyone else

I did love Dogville with Nicole Kidman, saw another 2 movies from him and nothing special, The idiots and other i don't remember.

You mean Funny games remake with Naomi Watts from 2002? in this case, it's exact the same movie, 100% remake.
Really don't know if my stomach is ready to watch Antichrist :D

Yep.. It was great to see some names i really like such as Mickey Rourke but Stallone really needs to let it go and retire.. That script was totally ridiculous..

yes, breaking the waves is another example of what Lars does best: emotional pornography.
Lars does break the waves (pun intended) of what Hollywood produces, and that is refreshing at times. But that doesn't necessarily make his movies great.
An example of this is that I can't really mention a movie of his that really seperates itself from the rest.

Btw, I was attending a filmfestival in Karlovac last week, during which I got to see two Croatian movies.. hopefully the two LAST croatian movies I'll watch, jesus. Never thought I'd see anybody be that (relatively) impressed by something so. shitty.

(to you who come from Croatia, one of them was "Two sunny days" and some extremely vulgar movie. and no offence.)

Okay, I'm shopping on amazon.co.uk because I need more films. So far, I've added
Sunset Boulevard
Once Were Warriors
Brief Encounter
Synedoche, New York
The Goonies
Vertigo
Shadow of a Doubt
Good Will Hunting
Following
Glory
Days of Heaven
Sleuth
Deliverance
Houe of Sand and Fog
Boyz n' the Hood
Rushmore
Brick
Werckmeister Harmonies
The World's Fastest Indian
Glengarry Glen Ross
Garden State
Badlands

But I won't order before next month. I would like to add more titles to the bunch, so I will save some money on shipment. Do you have any suggestions? I know buying movies is personal business, but I would like to broaden my horizon so to speak..
