I fully agree with that. If you are into Engineering for the name and the money only, then you might be surprised. Many people would go in with that mindset, but they will find it differntly.

And also, if you love math and science more than for mere application, then Engineering won't be good for you.

I heared a saying once, and it was so true: "An Engineer learns to build, but a scientist builds to learn."

yeah...well said! But a bit of blame could also be put on the way things are taught here...you hardly get to know anything of practical use, then we have gaps between students who went to 5-year-technical-high schools and learned already EE there on a lower level and the speed of the teachings is also more adapted to them, so if you come from a normal school, where you didn't learn that much about EE, you will be behind a lot and this will demotivate you in the beginning.

with all that said...I wouldn't even see myself as an Engineer in another country.

Yeah, I study Information Technology at Tampere University of Technology. It's my second year going now. Don't really know yet which my main subject will be. It's either software engineering or data communications. Studyin doesn't interest too much at the moment (these goddamn compulsory basic courses) and I've even thought about going exchange. Of course to Milano, but I have to think about the whole thing still, it won't happen at least next year.

Johnny Ludlow, haven't known you're from Tampere too. :) Let's go to watch some Inter matches some time, I've watched them this year with one beautiful Italian girl.

I did EE in my undergrad too. We had a flexible curriculum. I didn't do much circuit/quantum physics stuff. Instead I did quite a lot of programming in C, Matlab, and some Assembly Language.

Even though it's not directly related to what I'm doing now, the programming experience helps a lot.

Sorry if you already mentioned it, but maybe I missed it. What are you studying now Darsez? I think you once mentioned you are doing PhD or something?

oh, I'm glad that someone remembers this. Thanks! ;) Yes, I'm a second-year PhD candidate in finance now.

No problem, good luck with that!

I once thought (amongst my many ambitious but fruitless thoughts) of trying to go into business academia after the bachelor degree. However, I never really clicked with business (I took Economics and other business courses and I liked them) and couldn't see myself doing it!

Can you tell us more about finance? I am not so sure as to what is the real difference between, say, finance, economics and commerce?

What are you doing now, Hamed? Sorry I really have missed it.

EDIT: OK, I just checked this thread. Cool! I have respect for engineers (but I dropped out :p ) Good luck with that!

Yes, Economics and Finance are very closely related. The main difference is the focus. In Finance we focus mostly on the stock market, like how to price a stock, how people decide which stock to buy, etc. Econ is much broader: it can be individual/firm decision (micro), macro stuff like inflation and interest rate, or econometrics (which is basically statistics + econ). But a training in Finance requires a lot of Econ knowledge too. I was required to take a couple of micro and econometrics classes, since we need some theory to explain how the market works.

For Commerce, I really don't know. It's not very popular in the US I guess. I think it's more like MBA, i.e. more practical.
