Police man dies at Catania

A policeman has died outside the Massimino stadium in Catania after riots following the 2-1 loss to Palermo. The Sicilian derby was marred by crowd violence, which saw play delayed in the second half after teargas was thrown on the pitch.

The deceased policeman has been named as Filippo Raciti, aged 38.

The ANSA and Apcom news agencies said the officer was killed after an explosive device was thrown at him.

Catania's magistrate has already opened an inquiry about the events.

The Italian Federation commissioner, Luca Pancalli, was immediately informed about the situation and has decided to suspend the weekend's Serie A programme.

It is believed that hooliganism inside the stadium - which caused the match to be delayed twice - had spilled over into mass confrontation outside.

Both of Palermo's goals were contentious - Andrea Caracciolo's opener looked offside while David Di Michele's winner was clearly a handball.

Over a hundred people are reported to have been injured during the clashes.

It is not known how the policeman died or whether the incident that led to his death involved the spectator violence.

I just saw the incidents (thanks to Marcello's video) and I feel very sad to see what people make of football. I don't think that its football that makes people do this things, some people are just waiting for an excuse.

The "Sport" again ashamed by the behaviour of some fans that don't seem to understand it or enjoy it. Football is spread through out the world and it should be an excuse for people to get together and feel closer, not as a mean to promote hate.

On top of all this a human being died and another is fighting for his life at an hospital, sad, sad day.

There were Ultras, cops, a local match and a couple of dubious goals...It was a boiling situation. In that area there is a local rivalry for ages. I'm sorry for the death of the police officer, but we don't know all the facts.

This religious festival of St. Agatha (I think) basically means that there's a big festival on the streets with lots of people. Add this to a possible riot, and things would've been even worse with all those people in the city. So they moved the game to Friday. Originally authorities wanted to move it to 15:00, but both presidents protested and so they moved it to 18:00 --> you all saw what happened...

I heard the whole riot kicked off because police didn't allow Palermo fans to enter the stadium until the beginning of the 2nd half. They got so pissed that the moment they got in they started fighting, and the unorganized police force (actually police leaders also have a resposibility here IMO) was unable to prevent the escalation of the incidents.

It seemed that the police was somewhat surprised at what happened which is quite shocking considering the fierce rivalry between these sides (the hatred is so strong, I think you can only compare it to Napoli vs Roma). They were talking about this match for weeks, and when it finally comes, the authorities are caught with their pants down... Sad

What about the death of normal fans, from the hands of police? Should police be locked out?

Dont mix up some things, death is death. If its a policemen or its a ultra its still a shame. But let the things clear up, obviosly everyone is shocked right now by the death of policemen. But soon we need to see what caused such a violence, because there was no direct confrontation of palermo and catania fans. Infact the news suggest that palermo fans were not allowed to stadium untill second half, which kicked of violence.

Its just everyone blames ultras now, but believe me if ultra died there would be not much fuss in the media about it.

In the end all ultras dont deserve to be banned. Now I never been in sicilia, but I can say with my experience that curva nord milan is a relativle safe place and so are many other curvas in italy.

Rip to policemen once again, who gave his life away protecting others. I hope they will find the facker that made the bomb and threw it.

(Dinamo - Steaua Bucharest ) So if you ban ultras, you may as well ban the damn cops.

Cmon, what I get from your post is that the cops didnt have anything to do at the police headquarters so they started to shoot people with rubber bullets etc for fun or to do away with boredom?

The non- violent Ultras are a spectacle, without them football wouldnt be 1% fun. But people who kill, regardless of being an ultra, are not human beings for me. :frustrat:

There were more then 20-30 people arrested... And since there was no fight between Catania and Palermo gans, only the police and Catania fans, it is believed that this was planned...

Planned, in the means of attacking the police. There were also hand-made bombs, who would take bombs to a football game, if something isn't planned???

Well, apparently it was a revenge action...

In Italy I read that Raciti (the cop who died) was a witness in a trial against some Catania hooligan.

And btw: apparently Raciti was hit by 2 bombs (one against his car and the other one near him) and then got beaten to death with a stone or something...
