The CB trio does not look good in possession IMO. In the past 2 games alone, we've given the ball away countless times trying to play it out from the goal keeper. No doubt fatigue compounds that, but we simply do not move the ball out and around fast enough or competently enough. And I'm not just saying this based on a few friendlies. Spalletti implemented this idea, and we've vastly improved since Mancini days, but we're still simply not good enough in this regard. The CB's and midfielders need more time to function as a unit and become familiar with the channels / patterns / movements etc to reduce the amount of turnovers in our own final third.

One of the issues I've had with de Vrij for over a year now is that he takes the back pass option too often, even when there's very little pressure on him. As I've just said, I think we aren't comfortable enough playing the ball out from the back. And de Vrij repeatedly passing backwards to Handanovic (as opposed to literally anyone else) just puts us in that difficult position every time. In the time he's been here, there have been countless times when he's had several options to pass forwards or sideways, or even just hold the ball, but he inexplicably and unnecessarily passes to Handanovic. It should be the last option, but de Vrij chooses it way too often.

Side note: I personally think Skriniar looks very uncomfortable playing as the wide CB. In that position, he's more regularly being attacked by players looking to take the ball out wide. Most of his godly 1v1 stops against difficult forwards like Mertens, were in a situation where they were looking to take the ball inwards, towards goal. It's a system issue, more than one of personnel, but Skriniar excels at closing down the space for a player to attack then cleanly taking the ball off them 1v1. When players do have the space (and pace) to exploit out wide, I feel that Skriniar is in a position where he's not able to do what he's best at.

It's not saying much, since we were facing a Fulham team worryingly behind schedule as regards the physical condition (by the way, it was funny to see the Tottenham logo next to our name and the Juventus logo next to theirs on tv for quite a while, what a mess), but it was a promising first half, with some intensity and organization, much welcomed transitions and even good movements upfront by Vuci... I mean, Perisic & Esposito.

Chinese Inter fans were indeed prophetic with their banner: “Stealing is in Juventus' DNA”. Old rules, new rules, it makes no difference.

The progress we made in such a short time is certainly encouraging, and the players seem to be reacting positively to Conte's teachings/methods. The fact alone that even two absolute muppets like Candreva and Dalbert have so far managed to look competent enough in their new roles speaks volumes about his tactical expertise. However, our roster is still incomplete and the quality in a few key positions far from acceptable. We can't really expect the coach to steer a couple of players by remote for the whole season, nor can we expect the team to always be able to follow the game plan faithfully (which is the only way to bridge the gap against more technical teams). We've all seen what happened yesterday when our guys started running out of gas: the team gradually lost its shape and a gap opened between our defence and midfield, which juve were able to occupy with their offensive players. The loss of compactness and the higher pressure applied by our rivals were the main causes of the high number of balls we turned over and the tactical confusion that ensued. There's still a lot of work to do, but we're on the right track.

In light of all this, we need to complete the roster as soon as possible, naturally without letting ourselves be bullied around by the likes of Woodward and Petrachi. I am all for giving Conte the (kind of) players he deems necessary to implement his game plan, but at the same time he needs to be reasonable with regards to his requests. If Lukaku is unattainable/too expensive/whatever, he needs to settle for another player with similar characteristics.
In this respect, it seems to me that Conte's words (and attitude) have changed significantly since the meeting with Zhang Sr. Either he received personal reassurances from the big man, or he got scolded for his excessive whining.

Conte, what are your thoughts about him? Albeit it is only a short period but do you have any idea what he’s like?

“He remains me very much of Simeone. They live football with the same passion, they pay attention to details, they get the most out of the players that they coach. To me, Conte seems to be a very concrete type: he knows what he wants, he goes straight to the point and this is ideal for a player.”

Tell us the truth, how much did Simeone tell you about Inter?

“He talked about this team a lot, it’s the truth. When we saw each other, he told me that it was the greatest team that he had ever known, one with passionate fans. Diego is great. He followed an idea of play and culture that allowed Atletico Madrid to fight with Barca and Real Madrid. It was mandatory, the only way to compete against them. If we had done their style of football, we would never have stood up against them.”

What is a justification for the fact that Atletico play less… beautiful than the others? In Italy, the debate is very heated.

“I would say that what does it mean by playing well? I think differently: it is one thing to have ‘bonito’ style of play, to play beautiful football. And another is playing well. For me, playing well means winning. Victory is achieved by defending well and attacking well. There are so many teams that play beautiful football, they hold the ball for I don’t know how many minutes but then they lose. That’s not complete, that’s not good football. The important thing is the result.”

And is there a secret to it?

“No, but it doesn’t come just by chance. You will win if you have these ingredients: a good group that shares the same ambition and wants to work, work and work. Then you need a good coach. And the communion with the fans: we the players will feel it on the pitch, we will realize it, it’s positive energy.”

Can Inter already do that this year?

“We will try, I can assure you that.”

You signed for three years. Do you think you will be able to play another Champions League final?

It is myself who will have to adapt quickly to the team: in a role like mine, having empathy with teammates is fundamental, there must be a relationship.”

“That’s the market price, it doesn’t depend on the boy. He is very young and has shown great personality. He is certainly a good player and can become a top player, time will tell.”

What did you dream as a child?

“That I would be a swimmer. When I was 15, I had several records at youth level in Uruguay. I liked many sports: I played basketball, handball. Then at 16 I decided that football would be my life.”

How so?

“An offer came from a club in Montevideo (Atletico Cerro). They signed me, it was a door that opened up and I couldn’t help but to walk in. And I succeeded. I even played as a trequartista. My idol was Francescoli. He scored goals, it was beautiful to see, a symbol of Uruguayan that won Copa America in 1995, all the kids were looking up to him.”

It’s said that Godin’s header is like a work of art.

“I don’t do any special training, only focus on strength and explosiveness. But heading is different depending on the area of the pitch: the great timing that I have on the ball helps me in defense. On the other hand, in attack, you have to be aggressive because the only objective in the box for you is to score. And, of course, you must have an understanding with those who cross the ball.”

Do you see yourself as a coach?

“Now I would say no: too much tension, too many hours to devote to football off the pitch, even at home you have to study… No, I think I’ll do something else. But it’ll be football related because it’s my world.”

You are not very social, it seems almost in contrast with modern football.

“I don’t make judgements. But I don’t like to show too much of my private life and I think it’s right to be like that.”

You talked about Simeone, but who else pushed you to Italy?

“My father in law is Pepe Herrera who played in Cagliari with Francescoli. He had an amazing memory of Serie A and I talked to him a long time about it. And then there is my wife: she was born in Cagliari, she speaks Italian, I still don’t…”

Where do you see yourself living in a few years?

“In Uruguay… if I can convince my wife to leave Europe.”
