Great result! We can basically rotate our whole starting eleven against Benfica to rest between Juventus and Napoli. A loss doesn’t matter as a win against Sociedad at home brings us the first place regardless.
if we draw Benfica we need a win against Real Sociedad, but if we win Benfica we also need a win no?

Even if we win against Benfica and Sociedad loses to Salzburg we need atleast a draw against Sociedad, because we would lose the head to head tie against them if we lost at home.

So with this scenario in mind we have to play full strength against Sociedad, so that is why I would definitely rest everyone possible against Benfica.

Lukaku could definitely dribble. There was less agility in his game, though.
I get your point, but Lukaku was more like flattening bumps rather than dribble them. He was like a locomotive, once he caught speed, he was gone, but if there was anything but a straight road in front of him, he was like a brick wall.

Agree. Thuram is much more agile in tight spaces.

Good win, pity that lautaro couldn't finish at the end, it was a stunning first touch. We've not been spectacular but we are through and with all the other sides showing some weaknesses in the competition (not including city who's draw is a joke) we're top of the next pack of favourites i'd say.

Now we can give it our all against the scum of Torino and then fuck around in Champions League.

Unless Steven pushes för the win there, for that extra moneyz.

If Wera can compare Barrella to Guarin, I can see a bit of Adriano in tonight’s Thuram, no?

I was actually satisfied with this match. I had more issue with our performance in the home game against them.

Away games in the CL are not easy. Even if a team is considered 'weaker' they are typically champions of their national league and generally will have a winning mentality. Salzburg can be tough to play away from home.

I also liked our mentality in the second half as you could see that we were gaining momentum and went for the win in the end.

One thing we have to improve on near the end of games and I've seen this in pretty much all of our games - sometimes when we get the ball, we have one player just drive with the ball and lose it, giving initiative back to the other team. Barella did this about twice in the last few minutes today. He's not the only one guilty of it, but it happens a lot. I guess a part of it is we don't have many players who can use their pace or dribbling to move up the pitch. But then again, I feel we make the wrong decision quite often as well.

Lukaku gets past the defender using his speed and physique. Well, I don’t understand the exact terms but that’s not what I meant. Dribble as in Messi’s, R9’s, Ronaldinho, Iniesta.. that’s what I meant, gets pass the defenders in tight spaces using his mind and ball skills.

Funnily, Adriano was lke Thuram and Lukaku combined, good dribbling but also like a locomotive, when he got going.

Good post. Scrappy away win where we held our own and eventually took over in the second half, went for the win and got it.

Noticed too Barella fucking up big time in (at least) those two occasions. Calhanoglu also managed to fuck up at least once which led to dangerous counter in the second half. Focus needed!

Don't have one.
I was really impressed by how we won last night, and with huge rotation as well. What we have now is the patience and acknowledgment in players and coach that we can win games deep into the last minutes, which wasn't the case previous years, where if we didn't score in the first half of the game you could physically and mentally see nervousness starting to creep in.

That allows us to be more conservative and compact, which leads most teams to fizzle out when playing us, and us conceding very little this season. The root cause of all of that imo is the great team depth, which started the positive domino effect of what I mentioned above about players acknowledgment and assurance.

No more more final day drama. We are through, but still 1st spot is up for grabs. Even if we lose in Lissabon, with a win vs Sociedad at home we are first.

And its important. Its either City& Bayern see ya next year or we can gamble our way to maybe semis.

Most likely top in their groups would be Real, Bayern, City, Arsenal, Barca. Let's get the top spot.

Kinda easy comparing people that play in the same position, same role and play in a similar way. That is why I said "almost interchangeable". Also Barella was great yesterday, Barella >>> Mhki and Frattesi easily

Barella >>> Guarin >>> Frattesi so far for me
