Hello Interfriends,
I write with sad news to post that an Inter Symbol of past and present has left of us today. Giacinto Facchetti past away today at 64 years old. We all know he has been battling health problems in recent times but I am unsure of his exact illness that caused his death and took our president at such an early age.
Here is a tribute to a great player and above all man that had Inter in his heart! Facchetti will be remembered as hero, one that will live on in our memories as we see him running down the left wing for Inter and Italy. He was the inventer of the attacking full back and his runs down the left side in the 1968 European Championship was a sight never seen before.
He holds his place in the greatest Inter squad of the 60's along side Sarti-Burgnich-Facchetti etc coached by Helenio Herrera. He is a momument to the italian game who served his country in three World Cups and served Inter as a player and left as a president behind Massimo Moratti and his father Angelo Moratti before him.
Gacinto was born in Treviglio, Bergamo on July 18 1942. His love affair with Inter was born with a setback at 16 years old when Meazza recommended him for a try out with Inter Milano. Although he impressed there was no room on the squad. Facchetti wanted to play and signed with Atalanta but Inter officials persuaded him not to play and in November of the same year moved to Inter Milan.
The legend began in 1958. Facchetti was young and his days were filled with School in the morning, a sandwich on the run and his dad taking him on the train every day to Milan to practice with the team. It was Herrera who gave him his debut on May 21 1961 against Roma in a 2-0 victory for Inter.
The next week in his second game against Napoli, Facchetti scored his first goal in at 3-0 win. Facchetti got bigger and better and was part of the Scudetto winning team in 1963 for the first time. The national team came calling and on March 27 he made his debut in Instanbul against Turkey. The national team jersey would remain on his back as he made 94 appearences for Italia. 70 of those as Captain of the Italian National Team scoring 3 goals and winning the European title in 1968 and came second in the World Cup in 1970.
Il Mago Helenio Herrera transformed him into the "Terzino Bomber" that has been become the attacking full back we know today. In 1964 Facchetti lifted the Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup, also winning the scudetto again in 1965.
Fast forward to present day and Facchetti is still an ever lasting symbol of Italian soccer. Today the 19th president of F.C. Milano has left us. The Nerazzuro Champion and Captain of Italy will go on and never will be forgotten by fans the world over.
Gacinto Facchetti leaves us at age 64 but he will be in our hearts forever!
