QUARESMA FC
Will the man of a thousand dribles cross Europe's eyes?
by João Nuno Coelho
Translated from O Público, 05.09.2008

He is the last great artist of the new generation to abandon Portuguese football. Ricardo Quaresma was one of the few reasons to go and watch football in Portugal in the most recent years. The numbers of his last two seasons at FC porto are impressive. Fourteen goals and 24 goal assists transformed him into the most influential player of his team, with a direct participation on a third of FC Porto's goals in the Portuguese League. His importance at the three times champions was such that sometimes there was many references to Quaresma-addiction and almost always rightly so.

The Mustang (as he is always known) took on his shoulders the responsibility of making the difference: he was the one that had more shots and more crosses, more goal assists, more corners and more free kicks (both in Porto as well as in the whole League). He was also the only portista to score from a free kick in the last two editions of the Portuguese League; the player that was more fouled and that provoked more yellow cards at the opposition. But beyond the numbers, Quaresma excited the crowds of many Portuguese stadiums, with other kinds of "numbers": dazzling dribbles, teleguided crosses, "trivela" shots, monumental goals - including some for the National Team.

In spite of his performance, he always divided opinions and was even strongly jeered by FC Porto's supporters during the last season. Perhaps because Quaresma is not a normal player. He doesn't read the game, he feels it. He doesn't think football, he hints it. His football is wild, the years go by but it remains in pure state, raw, closer to the streets than to the stadiums. That is why he is called Mustang. He is almost always incapable of changing his form of playing regarding the way or the opponent that he faces. He plays too much for the crowds whom not always like what they see, as he has the tendency for ecesses of individualism thus often losing the ball. He seems sometimes to be the only player of an imaginary fourth team on the pitch: Quaresma FC. Many coaches rejected him: Rijkaard didn't like him at Barcelona. Scolari never gave him a real chance at the Selecção. Sacchi thinks he is a common player. His arrival to Italy holds an enormous question: will Mourinho manage to win the challenge of "taming" the Mustang, without putting out the fire of one of the greatest talents of world football? For Quaresma, the challenge is even greater: to prove that he really can be amongst the best.

No one is a godfather here. You can call me a beggar seeking attention.

Aaaah...Luka was right. I am already bored of this act.

What is bothering you here kiddo? I am not gonna behave like a lot of other members and shower insults on you. You are new and maybe you should understand whats going on before replying to every second person.
And you would find football related posts if the discussion has anything to do with football and not your bathroom antics.

He is trying to get better and i thought if his cross was converted today it would have been a different story..

He took on the defender well several occassion but couldnt convert the end product still. That said i thought it was still a mistake to take him off soo early in the game. His value was risen in my book when the subs couldnt be as visible.

could it be that wingers (not wing backs....attacking-wing forwards) aren't very effective in Italy because of the style of defense? Mourinho is trying to impose a very English flavoured football that would naturally suit Quaresma and Mancini/Adriano but thus far it hasn't worked. I would rather believe that than Quaresma and Macnini have suddenly become shit. Granted they now play for Inter but they chould look at least half good :D Anyway I remember Seedorf and Pirlo severely underperforming before leaving the dark side of Milan.

Mourinho hasn't generally done that well with flair players...the lazy but brilliant artists (deco being the only exception that comes to mind) before Inter. His relationship with Ibra seems on the surface to be good but there still seems to be an air of tension. Players like Joe Cole, Robben, Malouda, Duff, Crespo who seem to excell in the 'finer points' of the game haven't flourished much as the likes of the true "blue collar" type warriors...the Lampards the Terry's the Drogba's etc. I had sooo much hopes to see a great Quaresma come to Italy I can't for the life of me explain why a player with sooo much talent, speed and skills is doing such shit.

After watching the game I have to see I actually think quaresma had an improved performance. It was one of the first games in an inter shirt were I saw him to extend beat his man. He still didn't quite producing the end product. But I don't think he was as bad as some here made it out to be.

Worse player in the world.

Horrible!

Just play well in Portuguese Liga, where everything is easy.

He has talent, but its not our problem that he's doing shit in his prime.

no wonder you are from brasil... there is always this strange feeling that whenever there is someone doing better what you think you do well immediately this kind of nonsense appears...

What exactly does RQ "do better"? Losing the ball and making ridiculous trivela bullshit? Yep indeed.

i am new in this forum, but, even though, i already had the opportunity to see, more then once, how bad is your reputation. the most curious is that you keep justifying it post after post. try to put yourself up, as decent person, and you would make us a service, but, mainly, you would help yourself enormously.

in what concerns the main subject, just to say that rq7 played a great game in a friendly against brasil, some years ago: it was so humiliating for roberto carlos that i almost got a belly problem with so much laugh. for that, i think some brasilians are not very much in love with rq7. it was also a little rq7 fault, because in some movements, as things were going well, he exaggerated in that humiliation process. nevertheless, it was funny.

Eh, what Quaresma's performance in some Brazil-friendly years back got to do with the current moment? Now he's at Inter and he's sucking. Quaresma isn't doing any things better than his fellow players.

Thanks for the advice, but i could care less about my "reputation on this Board". Im not here to make friends, im here to make my opinion and thoughts known.

What kinda BS is that to write anyways? Perhaps you should join a cult where you can hold hands and suck eachothers dicks all day long being isolated from the real world. News flash buddie, in real life people wont always share the same opinions if you cant accept that you might as well go shoot your brains out because you wont get very far in life then.

Now let me give you some advice as well, if you ever want to be taken serious you should stop writing ridiculously biased posts about your favourite player here when he is obviously not showing anywhere near the required ability needed to be an Inter player.

Your Illogical fanboy posts makes no sense whatsoever. And in the future please refrain from sounding like some old well repected member who actually knows what he is talking about, because you clearly dont.

If you have a problem with my posts then use the ignore function, or else shut the fuck up and stop making senseless posts pointed at me, i could care less about your behavior advice.
