I think it's pretty obvious that what Spalletti asks of him is very different to what Pioli wanted. He's being molded into more of a DM. I think it's just a question of him fine tuning his game to get more used to it and we'll have a beast midfielder in our hands

He seems to be molding him into a De Rossi type of player. I dont think Gags has been bad like I said but he hasnt been as immense as when he first came into the team.

He s been intercepting plays and recovering balls like a bauss this season!

Amen. He has been vital in winning the ball high up the pitch. I think he's doing just fine. Does he get beaten cheaply sometimes, yes, but he's still learning. I'm glad Spalletti is giving him a run of games.

I think he should be rested for Verona though

Thought when we were playing well he was immense. When we went to shit he was also pretty shit

Pretty much what happened with our games after the winter transfer window last year..

Didnt he also get less of a rest than everyone else because of the u21s. Maybe he just needs a break.

January's effect was mostly due to his arrival from a well oiled machine into a team that barely had a pre-season and was in disarray. This year he's the one who has not had a proper pre-season and hasn't rested at all. I guess we won't see the best of him until deeper into the next season, like 14-15 months from now, as I expect him to go to the World Cup with Italy, assuming they qualify, and he'll have the same issues as this year with the only difference that most good players will also share that fate.

I think its safe to say currently he would be called up. Although I guess you dont need too many mids playing a 4-2-4 formation

and why you need to ask? He has been vital for us, a team without a proper DM. Its just one game or even just the first half?

He makes the odd mistake but he’s been a big part of our great start to the season. I don’t know why it’s fashionable to hate him all of a sudden. Still just 23 and playing a position where you get better with age, such a physical presence, decent passer not afraid to receive the ball under pressure. I think he’s a really important player for us right now.

Who said anything about hating him? If you fail to see his big dip in form that's another issue. He has been misplacing a lot of passes. His impact as a whole is nowhere close to how he first started. Seeing that he is a vital part of the team I hope he regains his usual performances but there is no question in my mind that has regressed instead of progressed in his second season.

And yes yes it's possible to ask such questions without hating on the guy.

Throughout the game thread I see multiple comments about “Failardini” or people asking for him to be subbed at half time. I think you’re taking the word hate a little too literally here, when I say hate I don’t mean you actually detest them. Just that all of a sudden it’s becoming fashionable to criticize the guy for every poor pass he makes. Valero turns the ball over too but when Gagliardini does it you can bet there will be multiple comments about it.

I really don’t think he’s any different than the player we signed in January, I do think his role in the team has changed and he’s taking on more responsibility. Spalletti requires we build from the back consistently, if you’re going to do that you are going to put your deep midfielders under pressure more often. The best example is the Napoli game, would we have ever gone there and tried to maintain possession deep in our half last year? If you’re going to play that way then you have to realize your midfielders are going to make mistakes, you live by the sword you die by the sword.

Gagliardini often comes deep to receive the ball under pressure, he’s improved defensively, and he is often the one trying to play forward out of the pair. I love Vecino but he doesn’t try and play forward often. So again, I think the amount of “hate” he’s getting is unwarranted and without context.

he didn't help his case watching juventus in their stadium. i think part of the "hate" comes from there. at least i know it's true for me, i don't like him anymore since then.

Gagliardini is good enough. If anything, he needs some competition because right now there's none. I'd love to see us try and poach Niccolo Barella in the January window. More than doable with all the FFP shit. Too bad we don't have any 'assets' to loan to them for the remainder of the season to sweeten the deal, like Karamoh would be if he wasn't on loan.

Pinamonti is a kid that imo should stay with us and learn from Icardi as much as possible. Sending him to a Serie A club won't help him or us. Or the team that will receive him. Being behind Icardi (& Eder) or behind Pavoletti, Sau & Joao Pedro isn't changing much other than making the training sessions weaker for him.
The only player they could use is Nagatomo but he won't be going. And you can't spend 20m on a full back just to loan him to Cagliari for 5 months (Dalbert). I'm not sure what kind of money they'll be asking for Barella but I guess something around 25m unless he's expiring in 2019. Doubt we can get that done without sweetening the deal to make it to 15-20 which is something acceptable for a rotation player in this age of crazy transfer fees.

I'd like to see us sending Pinamonti to a Serie B club that wants to succeed next season. Probably a Parma, Venezia or Salernitana type of team that won't be able to get promoted this season, yet there's a fanbase and a pressure to succeed. If he makes it there as their main striker I think the future will be bright. Too early to talk about Serie B 2018-19 though as it's still open. And too late imo to send him there as he can't get quickly adjusted to his new team, Serie B is quite rigid.

I agree, You also made a good point about people commenting whenever he makes a mistake. He has made mistakes in possession especially when being pressed, but Borja has also lost possessions and been out-muscled easily without most people commenting.

I also think Gagliardini has been our best ball-winner in midfield, and he also wins a lot of aeriel duels (less so against Cagliari as they had Pavoletti dropping deep and Ionita who are both really good in the air).

I do think he can improve in his passing but I believe he'll get better with Spaletti given that most of our players are improving with him.

Last season his role was much different as he made more runs into the box, while he's staying back more this season.

He made a nice run for our third goal though.

Thought he did decent in the little time that he played today. I wonder if Spaletti will see him more of a starter in the big games (as he was before) or keep going with Brozovic.
