Definitely Tokyo and Hong Kong when it comes to modern cities. Fantastic food and great shopping. Plenty of sceneries in Japan too, although they definitely are not as breathtaking. I definitely disagree with VLE when it comes to Singapore. Lived there for almost 10 years and we still go there once every 1-2 months, there's just zero specialty there that I'd enjoy as a tourist. It's almost like a worse version Hong Kong dare I say.

For backpacking, I'm not too sure because I'm not that kind of tourist, but as mentioned here, Bali should be in your list. Probably too mainstream these days, and it has lost a lot of its magic, plus it's pretty expensive too, but it still has its charm. Some of the sites are pretty unique.

VLE, you lived in Indonesia for 4 years? Which city? And I'm not sure why you said Indonesians show distaste towards foreigners. If anything, Indonesia and most SEA countries suck white people's dick. Unless of course you're of other ethnicity.

A friend of mine just got back from Singapore and he absolutely loved it. He was there for 5 days and he says he wants to go there again because there were a lot of stuff he didn't have time to do.

According to him, one of the best places he's ever been.

Well maybe if you don't like winter weathers, and you happen to be in the area during winter, then Singapore is your choice. But other than that, HK >>> Singapore.
