Oh my, i just read Stefan´s signature and i have to comment on it...

The Bosman rule: The best thing to ever happen to football!!!!

I guess you´re serious. That´s the most absurd claim i´ve heard. "Bosman rule is the greatest thing to ever happen to football." I just can´t understand how come anyone who is a big football fan can say such things. Say what you say, but Bosman rule is what is slowly killing the popularity of king football.

Michel Platini: “If football fails to return to its core values, over the next few years its popularity will fade.”

And Inter´s motto is, "An average foreigner is worth two great Italians".

What is meant by King football? I don't know what Platini is talking about, but soccer is as popular as ever. And I never heared anything that its popularity is fading.

I think it's unfair to suggest that Inter is anti-Italian. With all due respect, there are few good Italian players that can fit to Inter now. And the last two great we had (Cannavaro, Vieri) won nothing with us, not even a Coppa. It's not their fault, but this proves there is no correlation between not winning and having foreigners.

And soon Inter will be without an Italian player. If Favalli goes and we get another LB, I am sure it will be a foreigner. I'd love to have Italian players, but as I said, there are few great Italian players these days. I am just waiting for the Italian media to start curcifying Inter if we have a non-Italian regular line-up.

Platini´s comments

I dont think football is as popular as ever. If you ask me i think the popularity of football will fade and big part is because of bosman rule. Maybe it´s just me, but seeing teams using only foreigner players in their teams is not what´s good for this sport. Spectator´s are the one´s who mostly pay clubs wages etc. How many domestic spectators you think loves the idea to not see any of their country mens playing in their favourite team? Why do we even have domestic leagues, why not create one global league...

I, for one know that i hate the idea...

You´re joking right?

Dont wait any longer. We are in the same category than Arsenal is/was. We might even be more pathetic at the moment than they are. I dont follow EPL, but i assume they still use at least Cole and Cambpell in their starting lineup. We only have Favalli and like you said, Favalli may be replaced by another average foreigner for the next season. Internazionale or not, having one or less italians in starting lineup is pathetic if you ask me.

Tommi before the bosman rule players were treated as slaves. they could decide were to go on their own even if their contracts were up. the bosman ruling has made it very fair. And I disagree with platini about football not being very popolour. I see way more football on T.V. these days than before the bosman.

I agree that bosman rule isn´t all bad (like the fact you mentioned). Allthought nowdays most players are signed to long-term contracts and clubs pressure them into this to make sure they can sell them for a fee before the contract runs out. Also, we see plenty of cases where teams force players to renew their contracts and if they dont, they sit in the stands (Cassano, Iaquinta etc.). I wonder if that´s good?

Transfer fees are still there, quotas on homegrown players are making a comeback and the rich clubs are richer and the poor ones are poorer. I wonder if that´s good?

Well yeah, Bosman rule happened ten years ago. It´s only a natural effect that tv stations show more everything nowdays compared to ten years ago. Development doesn´t stop because of this rule.

As long as you can see it from tv, then everything is good and is considered more popular? :boogy:

Tommi youre looking at it from the traditional view. Years ago the domestic views were the most important ones. Back then most of the clubs money came from the gate receipts now more money come from merchandising and tv rights. You now have to look at the whole fanbase not just those who are able to get to the stadium. For a lot of fans the world has changed. the team matters more than from where the players come. We live in a multi cultural world. The barriers of before are getting removed.

But I know we will never see eye to eye on this.

It was a great step forward, and it still is. Players are workers just like everybody else, and why they should respect their contracts, they shouldn't be treated like 'stuff'.

However, like Jake pointed out, clubs are often abusing the players' rights by trying to force them to extend their contracts. That's an issue that needs addressing.

I think you can add a poll yourself, atleast thats what Tim told me :p

About the topic, I have mixed feelings about Bosman rule. It gives players too much power, which initially might be a good thing, but I believe that its just because of the Bosman rule, that Rich clubs keep on getting richer and the poor clubs keep on getting poorer.

This is what The Bosman Ruling is, for those who are unsure about this landmark ruling in football history.

Ciao,
Tim

Man thats just like saying it's unfair that big companies keeping getting rich and the smaller companies not being able to compete with them. It's part of globalization.

That part of Globalisation is what has to be addressed. I think the bosman ruling has done good and negative things to the game. Now we see much more money splashed out than before. Footballers normally not that educated feel that they have the right to earn 1000 times higher than other professionals in a week.
To me football administration needs a revision and that should look into those matters, less club loyalty is not something that I want for the future but we are heading that way. Real Madrid is just an example of how they have taken advantage of the rules as they have the money.

If you are succesfull players will stay loyal. It's really simple just like at companies. A succesfull one will have loyal employees a struggling one won't.

It's not a great thing but it's necessary. While it gives the player way too much power, it also gives the human being in the player some protection over his human rights should he be misused by the club.

For example, if Martins were not to ever sign a new upgraded contract since bursting into the scene in 2002/2003 despite playing very well, wouldn't it be unfair if his wage is not raised but he still has to be legally attached with a low-paying contract to the club?

But of course, nowadays, it gives the player too much power too. The best case is Cassano - Roma case, no explanation needed.

I don't like this rule very much but I think it's an absolute necessity to football and it's better to have it than not.

I'm from a small country, that cannot breathe without football. Clubs here are extremely poor and most clubs, including the one I support, doesn't make any transfers. Only free transfers. They sort of force a player to free himself of his contract and sign for them! This is very bad for smaller clubs here. The only good thing for my club is that 80% of the Cyprus NT members, that play in Cyprus, are playing for them! There is a 5 foreigners rule, which is a lot, and we are an EU member-state now, and some clubs have only 2-3 Cypriots! Some people here say it's a good thing, those supporting big teams(my club is top btw!) but I, and a lot of other people feel it's bad that we do not buy players! The economy of clubs sucks here! My club owes money to a player that has retired 8 years ago, and to players that left the club a long time ago! Players here do not get paid. They get November's salary in June... Had there been any domestic transfers, their financial status would have risen!

P.S: It's not the only reason for bad finances though ;) The club only receives 30% of tickets sales!!! Only season tickets are going to the club, but each time a season ticket gets in the stadium, 20% of its price goes to the FA and other guys! So this is kinda proof that the Bosman is not the only reason ;)

it's a 50/50 case..
it's good for players, but obviously, the players profiting most from bosman are the big players earning a lot of money already. however, to demand a transfer sum for a 28 year old player, although his contract is over, is pretty ridiculous.
They could have found a way to protect the youth better, and say that for any player under 21 a sum has to be paid to the club, but this would be all too complicated.
also, most clubs offer to younger players long term contracts with wage raise per year, (Messi with Barca e.g.) to avoid such risks, so it's ok.
The reason for the gap between rich and poor has more to do with tv rights and other stuff, than bosman.
Bosman was actually IMHO a good thing, for the reason handoyo explained above.

Just to add something in reply to UhUhOleguer, the TV rights in small countries like mine are minimal! It's not even 100.000 euros per year for the bigger clubs :p The clubs receive more money from attendances, which aren't very good in most small countries, so transfers were the best way to get some cash. Now players just go to FIFA, and get permission to become free agents, and they even get compensation on their contracts for that!!! If this is just to football then it's not the best sport ;)

EDIT: There is a small club in Cyprus that got more than half million euros from two players sold, and still "live" with that money, coz they only sign freebies and don't sell anymore!
