Haha yeah, it's hard to translate magari because its a nice word. I actually use it.

Well, the word is Greek and it means to be hopeful or wishful and essentially was synonymous with being blessed. So you said it in hope/wish to be blessed. The Canarias and the Azores were called Macaronesia, ie the Magari Islands to play with words.

When you use it on its own in Italian it typically means "I wish" or "I hope so". When you use it as part of a sentence it could also take the meaning of maybe, a synonym of forse.

I've also heard Italians use it in a sarcastic tone, when used on its own. So if I say Inter might win the Scudetto this year and someone says magari, he is pretty much telling me "as if" or something like that.

Was always baffled with Italian diversity of dialects (or actually legitimate languages of their own pre-Risorgimento and 1861),let alone some extreme cases in Switzerland with specific dialects used at nearly every valley.

Being Kazakh I would never be in the situation where I can be struggling to understand the simple "I wish" expression in Kazakh or Russian languages and ask for help or justification at interwebz forums Neologism,loanword or just an endemic word of closed community hence being relatively unknown any others are totally different cases,of course; as I understand, "magari" doesn't fall into that category.
