Lazio aren't seeded, which means they could possibly face one of Man Utd, Valencia and Leverkusen

It's a shame really, I bet they get knocked out

Knew it, Lazio will probably knocked out seeing how, bar jube, every Italian team seems to suck in CL

Valencia - Monaco & Sporting vs CSKA sucks too.

I think it has something to do with the Champions league.

It used to be for the champions only and even when they changed the name in '92 (if I remember correctly) there were more champions than nowadays. I think uefa wants to move little bit towards to that original idea that it would be for the league champions.

if thats true, then its absolute nonsense because football was so different. back then you could find quality teams everywhere in europe because the financial incentives for players to leave were a lot less. eg. hungary, romania, poland, serbia all had teams that went deep into intercities cup/european cup /intertoto cup, not anymore. dinamo bucharest, red star were even european champions which would be impossible today. puskas was in his prime in the hungarian league, for example. even a team like ajax would never be able to win 3 consecutive european cup titles today as they did in the 70s, or keep a player like cruyff for as long as they did. point being that there is a big gap in money and as a result in quality too which wasnt there before.

uefa houldn't be trying to accommodate teams that won trophies, they should be trying to accommodate the best teams from the best leagues in europe, thats all ther eis to it. so the "champions route" is complete BS.

I don't see what the problem is. This was intended to be a competition between the champions of each country, not a competition exclusively between the best teams in Europe. We had a competition called the UEFA Cup which UEFA destroyed, that did a good job of having top quality teams that weren't champions the prior season, face each other. It's not up to us to decide which league is worthy or not having their champions there. Give them all a fair shot to compete and they'll prove themselves that way. Don't just give "top" league teams an easy way in.

the reason it was organized like that before was because those countries all had great teams back then. quality was spread all across europe but it isnt like that anymore because the money is concentrated in a few cuonties nowadays. so its absolutely pointless. the champions league is for the best teams in europe, not the league champions of europe.

Yes I know, but leagues rise and fall. Shit leagues today might become good tomorrow. Good leagues today might become shit tomorrow. If they are unworthy, they will be eliminated. I think it's unfair to put some of the smaller teams through some insane ordeal just to get to the group stages, when teams like Arsenal just get a free ride every year because they manage to get to the knock-out rounds with generous seeding.

Champions from top leagues get #1 pot, while the smaller leagues have to go through a couple of rounds. I think that's fair enough. We've had teams from small countries like BATE, APOEL, Basel perform well in CL.

the champions league is for the best teams in europe, not the league champions of europe.

Disagree on this. Champions League was aimed at the champions of each league. Just because Platini's crooks decided to decimate UEFA Cup, doesn't mean we should allow the monopoly of one competition to gather all the best team

THEY HAD A DECENT RECORD AGAINST GERMAN TEAMS RECENTLY/
THEY ELIMINATED TWO OR THREE HERMAN TEAMS IN A ROW IN THE EUROPA LEAGUE SOME YEARS AGO.

leagues dont rise and fall. "shit" wont become "good" without money. money wont come without marketability. marketability wont come without good players and good football. good players and good football wont come without good infrastructure, good infrastructure wont come without money or initiative. its a vicious cycle and dont forget about the corruption in the football of smaller euro leagues.

BATE, APOEL were flukes more than anything else, so you shouldnt change the format for more flukes. while hungary had the best national team in the 50s and they all played together at honved for example. or that red star team in 1991 with pancev :)yao:), jugovic, prosinecki, mihajlovic, savicevic etc... thats the difference between then and now that im talking about. in the same way the new format would be obsolete 20+ years ago, as the old format is obsolete now.

they will get eliminated if theyre not good enough, and they arent, but its unfair to teams that are flatout better from better leagues but may not have the oppurtunity to lift the kazakhstan league trophy. dont even compare arsenal to any of those teams.

But, it's not the Champions league. There are already 2nd and 3rd places sides in the competition. Why at a certain point did they decide it's better that the champion of Kazakhstan is in the competition than the 4th placed Spanish side, or third placed Italian side. Yet the 2nd and 3rd placed teams are more important than various league champions?

What I'm saying is that it should either be one way or another. Either let all the national champions go straight into the group phase and let the non-champs all go through the qualifying round. Or stop this ridiculousness where you have qualifying matches where you have Valencia vs Monaco or Lazio vs Bayer forced to play each other, but Astana gets APOEL

its plain and simple unfair. purpose of the competition is to stand off the best teams in europe and this doesnt enable that.
