Unfortunately we're stuck with this situation when this season we could have had an exciting situation.
Getting rid of Godin was an unnecessary crime.
I'll assume that it's either Vidal or Tonali, cannot say that Tonali would have fared better in this season but for the club's sake, he'd be a far better transfer over the long run. But with Vidal you could aim higher this season which could have enabled something else later on.
We could have fielded a 4-3-1-2 which would have been the best fit.
Hakimi, De Vrij, Skriniar with Kolarov or Bastoni on the left. Godin as a rotation CB, with Bastoni also slotted there at times. D'Ambrosio as the backup RB.
The midfield three options are just excessive at this point. With 5 subs this season, there's no reason we should lose possession in the middle.
Eriksen, Brozovic, Barella, Sensi, Nainggolan, Vidal, Vecino, with Gagliardini sold or loaned somewhere. Eriksen and Nainggolan could also be slotted in front of the there, with Perisic and Sanchez also able to play some minutes there.
Attack with Lautaro, Lukaku, Sanchez, Pinamonti is fine.
Ashley Young was unnecessary to renew, especially at a 3m salary. We still have Asamoah who could play as a wide central midfielder which is his favorite position or left back, which he'd be good at when he has the entire flank.
And you could also switch this into a 4-3-3 with Perisic on the left, Sanchez or Lukaku on the right and Lautaro or Lukaku up front.
But let's enjoy our 3-5-2 with Skriniar off the team, Godin shut out, Ashley Young being a crucial part of the team and Kolarov being a center back.
There's a saying: When you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Well, we don't pay peanuts but we still get monkeys because our coach prefers to run a circus. The whole season will be based, just like last year, on the motto: fingers crossed.
