Have you ever seen that episode of Seinfeld where George Costanza storms out of a meeting with NBC executives saying he’s not going to compromise his artistic integrity?

And then Jerry later tells him “Artistic integrity? Where do you come up with this stuff? You’re not artistic and you have no integrity.” Football fans reminded me exactly of that.

The only thing you need to gather from that episode is the part where Costanza is asked "why am I watching it?" and he answered: "Because it's on tv"........
"Not yet" my friend. Not yet....

This is bullshit. Serie A is a national league, the other is international. They're two entirely different competitions that ideally should have no relation to one another. Internationally Inter/Milan/Juventus pull almost all the attention. No one cares about Crotone or Benevento.

It's one thing having the old style "European Cup" where only the champions fight. Having the "Top 4" was always a money grab (and cannibalised the UEFA Cup as a consequence). The Champions League is no more moral than the Super League.

Champions League; Earn our way to a top four finish
Super League: Be Inter

Yeah, sounds the same to me...

UEFA is doing the same shit. Now it's based on "historical merit". So if a new team finishes 4th, a "historic team" that ends 6th can overtake them.

This is inevitable. They want the "big" teams regardless for TV ratings and will rig the rules for it to be so.

Yeah. It's truly pathetic at this point. The project failed. Accept it and move on. Even if Inter and Atletico decided to return, you can't have a Super League without English and German teams.

It's not the same... Even though I think what they're planning with the new format is stupid.

They're rumoured to be giving out two wildcard spots based on coefficients. This is not the same as a closed league with 20 or whatever clubs.

You still have to earn your way into the competition.

No. European qualification should always depend on league position. ALWAYS. It should never be granted for free because of past achievements. None of the founding clubs deserve to be there by default. They need to earn it on the pitch.

And that's why my biggest issue with new CL format is granting some free spots based on coefficient points.

how many scudettos inter have?

Yeah. The coefficient point BS is just that, BS. That echoes the privilege stuff the Super league tried to bring in. It's not technically the same but pretty close.

But in general, you earn your place in the sun by winning. By merit. By playing well enough. That's the core of European football and its continental competitions.

18?

How's that relevant discussion how many domestic titles we have?

He brought it up because i said teams need to earn their success on the pitch.

Rube didn't earn those Scudetti on the pitch. They were bought. 2006 Scudetto was the least compensation for the stolen 1998 Scudetto.

There is an argument to be made that even though leagues and the CL appear fair on face value, you always get 3 or 4 teams that regularly end up winning. UEFA always want the top teams in the knockout stages because of of more viewership and interest, not to mention the issues hey had with FFP, with some clubs getting away with it and others getting burnt.

But at the end of the day, generally speaking all other teams get the same treatment and most teams in UEFA also get the same treatment hence if they had issues with any governing body the solution would have been to talk among the clubs and discuss these issues, not gather with other big clubs around the world and say screw everyone lets make our own league, sell it directly to people all over the world and thats that.

I mean i was reading that Agnelli was also the president of the lega and he was rejecting financial deals for Serie A knowing that he had formed some of the papers for the SL. Whats gonna happen in the future between clubs? how will clubs even work together on any initiatives or transfer dealings for that matter?

Conte on Super League issues

The last three days have been dominated by the chaos of 12 clubs, including Inter, announcing they would set up a breakaway Super League, then scrapping it 48 hours later.

“Inevitably, we also heard all this news that was coming in. As a man of sport, I think we must never forget tradition. This is history and it should be respected,” noted Conte.
“We must never forget the passion for sport and, certainly not least, sport must be meritocratic. We work to win and to earn something. Meritocracy must always be first and foremost.

“Having said that, everything which happened shows it’s only right that UEFA reflect too. They organise tournaments, take all the rights and reserve only a minimal part of that for the teams who are actually taking part in these tournaments.
“The players are squeezed like lemons with this packed fixture list and get very little for it. So the organisations need to consider a more congruous remuneration, because clubs invest in coaches and players, so they deserve some of the revenue that they help to generate.

If you get 10 from rights and keep seven of it for yourself, giving out just three to everybody else, that’s not really fair. I think the split needs to be reconsidered.

The new Champions League format will have even more games, as it’ll be two groups of 10 playing home and away.
“I haven’t really reflected on the format. It doesn’t matter who many are in there, the important thing is that there is meritocracy, otherwise sport loses its meaning. Meritocracy is the most important thing, but also the organisations including those who run the international fixtures need to consider spreading out the resources a little better.

> easy to talk AFTER the storm, but he`s right.

Well why Ajax wasn't there? They have more CL titles than Inter do. They have many Dutch titles.

The precise issue of that kind of closed league is that the organizers decide which club is in and which one is out. In UEFA competitions, at least technically, you can start from division 5 and get to CL. Money dictates the realities of course, but it's possible.

This is the clear distinction.

I don't know about that what Conte talks. I think UEFA already dishes quite a large chunk of their money to UCL teams, specially those getting to knockout stages.

In the 2018/19 season, UEFA generated €3.25 billion. It deducted €295m to cover for administration costs and €510 for the Europa League and the Super Cup. It also paid out €227.5m to the football associations of most of the leagues that participate in the tournament.
After the deductions, Champions League participants competed for €2.04 billion. It is important to note the competing clubs include those that participate in the qualifiers but fail to clinch a spot in the group stage. These teams share €30 million.

Exactly. Where was Ajax? Where were Benfica and Porto? Three clubs far bigger than Arsenal and Tottenham. And like you say this is the clear distinction with CL. In CL everyone has a chance for success no matter how slim it is. Lyon were given the opportunity to eliminate City and Juve. Same with Leipzig when they eliminated Tottenham and Atletico. There are so many examples. In Super League those teams wouldn't even be allowed to participate.

So they are dishing quite a large chunk already to CL clubs. Of course the corruption should be reduced but I'd say the biggest corruption there is that 300m€ admin costs of UEFA. Ridiculous amount of money, but still, that's only 300m€. Wouldn't move any needle anywhere if that whole chunk was added to CL allocation.

Still a question of money. Will greed kill the beautiful game, whether it is UEFA/FIFA or an ESL like alternative...or will cooler heads prevail and accept less through more equitable revenue sharing?

We'll see
