Am I the only one that thinks 55 mil isn’t a terrible fee? He would still be one of the most expensive goalkeepers in the history of the game. And most of the goalkeepers that have gone for more money were younger when they made the transfer. Onana is by no means old, especially for a goalkeeper, but that means something.
I mean we got him on a free with no competition besides Marseille a year ago. I wish he would stay as our keeper till he’s 35 but this isn’t a bad sale price imo. The real issue is how we intend to use it.
I'm thinking the same. Obviously as fans we'd always want the maximum, but I feel this forum sometimes overly 'underrates' some of our selling. I remember when there were talks in selling Skriniar for 50-60 million, a number of fans were saying we should not sell him for less than 80. Like you said, Onana would still be one of the more expensive goalkeepers in the game.
In addition, I do believe Manchester United are under some 'restrictions' in terms of how much they can spend. People look at the fact that they paid almost 100 million for Antony but forget that attackers cost way more and Ajax had already sold a number of players that summer, hence asked for a much higher price. If someone comes to us near the end of the window for Lautaro, you can bet we'll set a huge price (maybe not the best example but the point stands). Even in our first big 'selling season', we sold Lukaku for one of the highest transfers for a player ever.
In other forums I go to, people wonder how we managed to get so much money for someone like Pinamonti (20 million for a fairly limited attacker) and 20 million for Casadei (obviously talented, but 0 senior performances at the time we sold him).
We have undersold some of our players, but we also got good money for Lukaku, Pinamonti, Casadei (given his inexperience - whether it was the right move is a different story).
The Brozovic and Skriniar situations were the obvious mess-ups, but it's not the easiest situation either when everyone knows our financial situation. I'm just glad we're at least somewhat holding on to our valuation for Onana. Originally I worried we'd sell him for 40 million, but it looks like we rejected 50 million, and want more.
