“My time as Real coach? In February 2007, I decided to fire Ronaldo, he was a person who liked to party and involved the group by going out with him. Van Nistelrooy once complained that the Real Madrid locker room smelled of alcohol. It was true... That year he weighed 94 kilos.

Berlusconi called me to ask for advice on a hypothetical purchase of Ronaldo. I advised him against it, saying that he was a party animal who only thought about women. Berlusconi told me 'Thank you, Fabio'. The next day, Ronaldo was in Milan.

Cassano? He asked for fries before every game, something unacceptable.”

- Fabio Capello on LIMEC.

I was listening to an interview of his one day when asked how he experiences life as a president watching his players. He said that once he was discussing with his striker that missed a clear 1to1 chance with the GK on how to move his body , make the GK fall and then dribble past him.

I am wondering how come Ronaldo used to dribble so many times past the GKs while in the last years we rarely see it if ever. Is it because Ronaldo was so fucking good and made that seem easy or smth has fundamentally changed in the way the game is played and the strikers are no longer in a 1to1 position with the GKs

Yes, Ronaldo was that good.

But it's also for a few other reasons.

Players these days have limited exposure to "street" football, it's all textbook stuff. And textbook says: shoot the ball. As it says: pass the ball. So you don't see this happening as often.

There are places in the world now that are reverting to some hybrid kind and teach kids to play in 2vs2 or 3vs3 situations at a very young age to force them to be able to go past their defender. And get them to become better defenders. We lost both traits in the graduation classes of the last 15 years because the focus has been elsewhere. And when everyone does the same thing everywhere, there's bound to be someone who's better at it. Hence why Spain, Germany, Portugal and France for example had better prospects coming out of their countries whereas you struggle to see Argentina, Brazil (who still have a "street" element but it was rapidly declining) or even Italy and the Netherlands who also struggled with this sort of football globalization.

So to answer your word simply, it takes guts for these kids to try to go past the keeper in this day and age because that means that they did all they had to do at the academy level, but also ignored their coaches' commands of doing it "the right way", whatever that is. The worst of it all is from England, they've always been about "shoot it" whenever you were clear at goal.

Strikers still get 1 on 1 opportunities, probably even more than before per striker as a general rule across the sport. But there's less strikers on the field. Game has gone much wider than the Ronaldo era. It was also wide in the 70s and 80s, but a different sort of wide and they still had more attacking players in the box.

I expect that we'll see this becoming a trend again - unless stopped by some new defensive setup - over the next 15 years.

This is U8 team, they record and upload to ML platform l, analyse plays, ask kids to do only this and that. It would be all mechanical style in future.

Yes, we are losing creativity in the game. Not just because the game is changing (we rarely see a ''real number 10'' anymore). But mainly because we don't let children play the game and experience the fun of the game. You should let children up to U13 play the game without any tactics and only coach on technique and skills.

Kids nowadays don't play outside anymore so the technique everyone learns on the street or any grassfield is lost. So it's becoming a social problem, at least in Holland it sure is.

Where are you based?

You're describing central/western Europe in the late 2000s through the late 2010s. Things started to change over there now at this level. It'll eventually trickle down to the rest after 5-8 years, or maybe less now with social media, as that's pretty much how long it took for everyone to follow the current model

“It’s coming home” land.
As you can guess, kids want to dribble towards the goal but coach mold them into fast pace, rigid play style.

Why doesn't everyone else have the same opinion as me? Are they stupid? - brehme1989

I'm 100% with you on this, though.

Come on the reporter acts as if Mourinho talked about Goran Pandev :D

That good? can only be the words of someone who never saw Ronaldo play

I mean all players have gotten better since he was a player. He did some awesome things on the field but Messi and CR7 are fking video game create a players with unreal amount of goals.

Especially CR7 who probably not going to be in the convo for goat because he never won a WC. Won a euro with a garbage team.

He also had a team 90 times worse than Ronaldo’s Brazilian team (94-02 Brazil was out of this fki n world, felt in 06 they could have won if the goal wasn’t make him the all time scorer and actually win the cup)

Messi (give me a pk every game) makes him the goat for winning cool

Dude,

Imagine someone who dribbles past several defenders in tight spaces like Maradona, Messi or Baggio.
Imagine someone with Ronaldinho's driblling skills.
Imagine someone with Totti's first touch.
Imagine someone with Romario's off the ball movement.
Imagine someone with Cristiano's first step explosiveness.

Now imagine all that in one person, running the show at Mbappe speed levels...

And then tell me with a straight face that he's not the video game character. Because this was Ronaldo at his peak.

What the are you talking about? Are you joking around or simply confirming that you know fuck all about football?

It's pretty simple: in the future, there will not be another Ronaldo. Brilliant footballer and in my opinion, the best the world has ever seen.
