One of our bigger problems is that hardly anything goes through the center. And that's cos we have no one there. Our midfielders are either moving too wide, or falling back in defenders' positions. And our side CBs and wingbacks are continuously moving up. That leaves us with big gaps in the middle, and with zero technical quality there. This is also where all the counters emerge from.
The first thing that will happen with a 4 man midfield is we get to control the tempo of the game more.
Secondly we have enough technical quality and versatility in midfield to make this work. At AM, it's not just Eriksen, but also Nainggolan and Vidal who can work. We have the perfect players in Barella and Brozovic for CMs. None of them is a pure DM, but are anyways playing that role. They would do better with more players in the midfield. There's also Sensi who can play the deep lying playmaker role.
Thirdly our defence is also well suited for it. Bastoni can be the LB who ventures forward less, with Hakimi bombing on the other side. It would be reminiscent of Maicon and Chivu in those positions. You could have Young there to provide more attack on the LB side if needed, or D'Ambrosio to be more defensive on RB. Even Kolarov could fill in for 45 mins at LB.
Moreover the midfield doesn't have to be a diamond all the time. It can also be a flatter 4 man midfield at times based on how we want to setup. This can have Hakimi on right with 3 midfielders, or Perisic on the other side.
The basic point being we can play many different formations. And that's what most teams do. The only team I've seen play only one formation for every single match last season is probably Liverpool with their 433. Then again, they didn't have to change since things were going so well. But all other teams adapt, for various reasons. It's only Conte who is stuck on this 352 shit.
